The fools gamble

This story took place in Valmir, Welkims keep. In this city where art and craftsmanship enjoyed a high status and is considered the trademark of the city, food sometimes fell a bit short in recognition.

However there is one exemption, a festival dedicated to less spread craftsmanship and art.. Each year it was accompanied by a cooking competition. The best chefs of the entire island came together to represent their talents and earn their admiration. The judges were hand picked high ranking members of the largest syndicates ruling the city. Needless to say, the stakes were high.

One cook in particular was outstanding. The first he entered the competition as a no name he swept the floor with the other challengers. No one not a single soul could stand against him. This cook single handled carried the food industries to new heights. Suddenly everyone wanted to learn how to cook just a little better.

He won the next year and the year after and the one after. For 15 years he won and it wasn't even close.
Rumours started to arise, he must have bribed the judges. Sure no one can deny his talents but 15 years? People started to believe that no matter what he served his name alone was enough to win the price. Slowly but surly the cook himself started to believe those rumours and he took some pride in it.

Then after one especially sombre night he decided to prove them right. He would prepare a meal made by the most disgusting ingredients he could think of. The week leading up to the competition, he spend day and night tinkering out his disturbing recipe, preparing his ingredients to hide their true nature.

The day of the competition arrived and he presented his meal, a small smile on his lips when witnessing the judges devouring his entry.

He won, once again by a landslide. When asked about his recipe, the cook just smiled knowingly and called it a secret.

His fame increased by each passed week following the competition. Apparently his entry was his best masterpiece according to the judges. The cook could have gotten away with it, if it weren't for his apprentice, who found and sold out the recipe. Revealing it for what it was, shit.

Needless to say the syndicates were not pleased with being fooled in front of the entire city and thus he was killed as punishment his apprentice taking his spot but never achieving his masters heights.

Thus the fools gamble was borne.
