Curse of Mores (kɜs ɒv mɔres)

What's the consequence of using (or misusing) magic in your setting?

Transmission & Vectors

Mores' Curse is not contagious. Only those who greatly abuse their magical powers and upset the Gods become infected.

Causes

Those who greatly abuse their magical powers and upset the Gods become infected.

Symptoms

Within the first week of infection, a creature infected with the Curse of Mores will lose their connection to the arcane, and their skin slowly becomes rough, fragile and painful to touch. The blemishes on the skin will continue to spread slowly across the creatures. After, it will then spread inside the body and across the creature's organs. The affliction will continue slowly spreading until the creature is completely covered and the creature will then be petrified to stone. The process is often very slow and painful. There is no exact amount of time from infection to petrification, it has been observed to take anywhere between two months and thirty years.

Treatment

It is impossible to cure a creature of Mores' Curse without intervention from the Creators or Mores herself. However, it is possible to reduce the pain and/or extend an infected creature's life using powerful medicines and/or magic.

History

In the year 150 1A, the tyrannical third king of the Gestari Kingdom - known as King Tyrannus as his name was lost to history - was reported having painful blemishes across his skin. Over the years, his condition grew worse, leading him to be bedridden for the last five years of his life. He was petrified twenty years after his doctors notices his blemishes.   His petrified corpse is kept in the Magna Palatium in the city of Gestus.

Cultural Reception

By the majority of society, people afflicted with the Curse of Mores are outcasted and ostracised, as they are seen as evil and blasphemous. Some cities have even banned entry to the cursed. However, the people of the Blood Islands and the few people living in Cassus Orientum let the cursed take refuge amongst them, as they are outcasts as well.
