Fenié

Deep beneath the ground, below the majestic World Mountains with white-tipped peaks which touch the highest of skies, the fenié stalk in pitch black tunnels and caverns weaving across the earth's nameless corners. They are silent, they are patient and they are hungry.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Born from humans, a fenié's appearance can strongly resemble one, at least from afar. Should one be unfortunate enough to experience a closer encounter, they would see the elongated limbs, the misty white eyes and the pale white complexion only found on the faces of the dead.

Genetics and Reproduction

Fenié's bite, when not lethal, will turn any human into one. This is the only known way the creatures reproduce, and it is suspected they do this deliberately. Whether timing, season or other factor is required for such an instinct to surface remains unknown.

The turning process is agonizing, judging from the screaming the soon-to-be fenié tend to let out. Bones crack and grow, fangs and claws push forcefully from behind as their former, human teeth and claws fall off. The victim's eyes grow hazy and they begin to shun any light, even a candle, as if its mere presence was enough to kill.

By the end of the same week a fenié is born from what was once human. With an eternal hunger, they may begin by devouring the closest of their friends and family, or perhaps a glimmer of something human yet remains, and they instead turn and run up the foothills and disappear somewhere within the World Mountains to find something else.

Ecology and Habitats

Fenié live beneath the ground, within the endless network of tunnels, caves and caverns running throughout the World Mountains. They only leave the caverns to hunt during the night.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Fenié require fresh blood from the living to keep themselves alive, however this is not to nourish them as such. They use blood to keep themselves alive and to keep within their body whatever life or soul may remain locked inside.

Outside of that, Fenié are obligate carnivores, and while they can scavenge when they cannot find anything else, freshly hunted meat will always be their first choice when possible.

Behaviour

Completely and fully isolationist, a fenié will fight others of its kind to death unless forced to retreat. Suspected to keep and mark territory, however the mechanics of this are not entirely clear.

They are intelligent and patient hunters, capable of mimicking voices and yelps of beast and man alike. They are fully capable of setting up traps and baits, or silently stalking their prey until they learn how to best catch them. Fenié will always try and bait a single target away from the others, when dealing with a group of prey.

Few enough have ever seen a fenié and lived, and none have witnessed one's behavior outside of hunting trips. As such, their behavior, communication and more remains an unsolved mystery.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Both sense of smell and hearing have significantly improved. While not wholly blind, fenié are extremely near-sighted, however they do respond to light—even dim lights from further away.

Fenié cannot stand light or warmth, and will avoid the two at all costs. Changing the source of light does not seem to change its behavior.
