Sapient Species

The Sundering
Some species you can find all over the place today in Lothrea, have been here since it's beginning. They've been created alongside this world at the beginning of time. Among these first mortals to walk upon Lothrea were Humans, Halflings, Giants and Dwarves. Then during the first great god war, the War for Dawn, the world was ripped apart. The Sundering ripped the world into three pieces - the Material World, the Shadowfell and the Feywild. Some people present during the event got pulled into the newly created planes and morphed by the power of magic. These people became Fey- or Shadowborn.
Elves
Elves inherited the grace and beauty of the Fey. They have a natural affinity to magic. Compared to humans, they tend to be slightly shorter on average and more slender. After arriving back on the material realm, they quickly adapted to their surroundings, forming the different Elven races we know today. Even if all of them share a common fey ancestor, today they might have close to no similarities.

Orcs
Shaped by the shadow realm, Orcs became stronger and more durable. Compared to humans, they tend to be taller and more muscular, their body perfectly adapted to survive the dangers they were faced with. Even today their advanced endurance provides them with a natural protection of simple diseases, and sometimes even saves them from a lethal blow in combat.

Humans
Humans don't live nearly as much as many other species out there, but they were one of the first to set foot in this world. Humans are incredibly adaptable to new circumstances, and their physical attributes reflect that. They can range from 1.5m close to 2.0m in height, and 50-120kg in weight. Their skin ranges from very pale to nearly completely black, and their hair can take on colors from black to blond.

Gnomes
While halflings were commonly said to resemble short humans, Gnomes share more similarities with their feyborn cousins, the Elves. Their skin tones can vary in hue from reddish all the way to shades of grey, depending on the various environments they found themselves in after the Sundering. Gnomes often have a natural grasp of magic and an inherent drive to learn and explore.

Goblin
Goblins often have flat faces, broad noses, pointed ears and sharp fangs. Their skin colors ranges from yellow through shapes of orange and green. They share the nimbleness and agility of the Halflings, but lack their sturdiness. Being born by the Shadowfell, they became clever and adaptable, quickly changing and evolving to fit new circumstances.

Halflings
In many ways, Halflings resemble small humans and share a similar range of hair and skin color. With more rounded faces and exotic eye colors across the entire spectrum of a rainbow, they often retain their youthfull looks even in old age. Despite - or maybe even because of - their small size, halflings are often sturdy and agile.

Firbolg
Firbolg's are one of the few remaining giants. They have a thick, often pink to purple skin, and hair in various different colors, but often red or blond. While they don't share the inherent affinity to use magic like their other Feyborn cousins, they have an intrinsic sense to feel its effects around them. This intrinsic sense sometimes even gives them the ability to communicate with nature to a limited effect.

Ogres
Ogres stand at a similar height to their Feyborn cousins, but often have an even more powerful build. Their looks gave birth to many prejudices during the Age of Arcanum, often depicting them as lazy and brutish monsters. But finally, during the War of Fate, as they fought alongside the other mortals, their reputation changed. Today it's still rare to find them in major settlements, but it's not unheard of.

Giants
Not much is left of the giants today. It's been said that they could reach heights of five meters and more, their ancient ruins being testament to that even today. During the Sundering, many of the Giants were killed, and the few survivors died soon after. Maybe some of them made it and survived till this day, but the world considers them extinct.

Dwarves
Dwarves are the exception of the original four species of the Dawnera. While Humans, Halflings and Giants were affected by the Sundering, Dwarves were not. Some believe they were just too stubborn to be ripped into multiple versions. While dwarves are shorter than humans, they make up for that in bulk, often being as heavy as them.

Plane Touched
From time to time, some individuals are touched by the influence of other planes or cosmic powers. These Planetouched are changed, sometimes only mentally, often times also physically, and develop supernatural abilities and gifts, as well as a deep connection to the powers or planes that touched them. As these changes happen randomly and can only seldomly be predicted, Planetouched often have a special place in their societies - sometimes seen as Chosen people, other times as outcasts.Elementalborn
Some people are touched by the prime elemental forces surrounding the material realms. They take on aspects of the element that influenced them, often changing their appearance and granting them an affinity to elemental magic.
Devil- & Demonfolk
Influenced by the hells and the far realms, Devilfolk are often outcasts of society. They usually show clear marks of the extra planar influence, like a changed skin color, horns or even tails.
Created Species
After the The Sundering, the Dragons created their own species, their own followers. They wanted to be worshipped like the gods, but the other species of Lothrea didn't want to worship them. So over a few centuries, they created their own species, like Kobolds, Lizardfolk and the Dragonborn. Led by their creators, the Dragons themselves, these species built an incredible empire originating from the continent Dorovari. The Everlasting Empire of the Dragon stretched across the whole continent and had colonies all over the world. It's said that the sun never set within the empire. But just a few decades before the War of Fate, the entire empire, and all its inhabitants on Dorovari vanished without a trace. The colonies quickly lost hold of their conquered areas until they had to fall back into small regions. These remains of the empire usually keep to themselves and have very tense relationships with the surrounding countries, as the old wounds sit deep.
The Everlasting Empire of the Dragon researched the foundations of magic and the world. They have discovered countless things that have been lost with them when their empire vanished. One of these discoveries was the creation of automatons of all kinds. Starting with dumb simple robots, they perfected their craft over time, until they created artificial sentient beings. After the Empire vanished, these automatons were left behind, now walking through the ruins of the old Empire. From time to time, some of them reach other continents on ships or just walking along the sea floor until they reach their destination. As these automatons have lost their purpose without the Empire, they are often looking for a new one in new lands.
