Spokane City of Wheels

In far distant Perseus Arm in a stellar clustar called Auriga an ancient long dead race built many rare and wonderful artifacts. Many on a planetary scale. One such construct is a fullerene world. A fullerene composed of nano-carbon molecules positively charged to curve, which formed a spherical ball approximately ten meters thick. With an airlock built within an outer surface facility allowing egress to the inside and to the outer surface. Situated at the interiors center in geosynchronous stationary location is an artificial star. That cycles bright and dim giving a day and night cycles. It provides enough warmth to support life within a habitable zone. Too close and objects burn up, to far away and they freeze.

The unknown ancients brought humans from Old Earth to live within this hollow sphere. The humans were taken from Ancient Greece according to the oral and written legends of the people who dwellen within when contacted an estimated six millennium later. Those taken from Old Earth Greece continued to live in city states as their forefathers did. They carried with them, from their prior homes, all the dislike and conflicts of old.

Given cities which spun to provide artificial gravity and sails with which to navigate on the thermal drafts created by their machine star the ancient ones from Old Earth kept their prejudices and waged little wars against one another. Each of their city states soon fell into ruin and despair. Now only held together by bits and pieces of detritus and the odd ends they could created from the meager materials they could harvest.

Then arrived the explorers, those brave souls who left Old Earth to explore the stars beyond known space. Their journey took nearly three decades and when they arrived and found the remarkable fullerene world they entered and sought to bring order to the chaos.

They built their own spinning city and called it Spokane. No one knows why, perhaps it was a joke, a play on words for the spokes of a wheel. The people the ancients brought millennium past did not take well to the new arrivals and for once in their long history unified to expell as they called them, the invaders. Having advanced technology the colonists of Spokane were able to hold their own, but not without cost.

Those who had lived within the fullerene sphere had learned to use it as a weapon. Either sending debris to rise up the warm air currents that moved away from the machine star or by breaking off huge chunks of ice from the frozen sphere wall to fall back in towards the sun. Spokane on many times was caught in the crossfire and damaged. Yet in the end an agreement was reached for each side to live in harmony and learn from each other.
