Codex of Edicius

Said to be written on a great scroll made from the hide of an archon with ink made from the blood of a devil the Codex of Edicius expounds on the principles of law and truth that serve as the foundation of an ordered society. It is said to have been penned by the god Edicius Architect of Oaths himself, of the Celestia, when the first scattered bands of humans gathered to form their own community after throwing off the yoke of the Ogres. At times compared to the pillars of philosophy debated by the scholars of the high ogres, the 39 Principles of Order explained by the Codex of Edicius are the guiding tenets his clergy use to write law and build stable societies with.   The journals and biographies of high sentinels who have studied the Codex of Edicius in person describe attaining a state of elevated consciousness in which they perceive the world through a veil of serenity. Petitioners seeking to study the original Codex of Edicius are put through an extensive period of examination by the clerks and guardians of the libraries that know of its location, to protect the artifact and those who would read from it. Scalesman of Meash Pendulum Heart sister of Edicius, goddess of judgement, who have read from the great scroll describe an almost overwhelmingly volatile emotional experience, evocative of the rage and despair that can be wrought by their decisions.   In keeping with the Twenty-First Principle of Order, many copies of the Codex of Edicius exist. The teachings for many novitiates of Edicius and his sister Meash involve copying and being able to recite the 39 Principles of Order, with focus by the clerks of the Bright Lord on flawless reproduction of the text. Most of these are on simple parchment, however there are many copies on fine velum given as ceremonial gifts during the founding of new settlements or dispensation of new fiefs. These ceremonial codices are often the vehicle for geasa or simpler vows of duty or fealty, but represent one of the strongest forms of oathbinding availalbe to common sparks.
