Ardelvo

Structure

The Mage School at Ardelvo is best described as individualistic.    Those with the gift of wanded magic must complete a series of 'Basics' courses before they are permitted to purchase a wand or staff. These courses are offered once a year, in large groups, and it is up to the individual to ensure that they are completed. After 'Basics,' the student must then complete the 'Fundementals' course, also offered once a year, before they can be considered a Journeyman.    From then on, learning consists of solitary research and individual study. Journeys are evaluated by a group of Mages known as the 'Review Board,' and are displayed at the school for peer review. If the Board deems them a worthy study, the Journeyman is promoted to Mage. Mages are permitted to continue their research at the school, though there are some hermits who prefer to study alone in the far corners of Llyris.

Culture

Wand Makers

Wands are currently the most popular tool at Ardelvo. The use of staffs has fallen out of fashion with only the most senior members still choosing to wield one. As such, wand making has become an increasingly profitable trade. Those dealing in specialized wood or intricate construction are in high demand, creating an elitist society based on how elaborate your wand is.

Secrecy

The solitary nature of Ardelvian study has created an atmosphere of secrecy. Mages often refuse to collaborate for fear of someone else stealing their research or publishing something similar before they finish. In fact, after achieving their mastery, many Mages refuse to publish anything else for review, keeping everything they learn as a private secret. This has resulted in many Mages 'reinventing the wheel' by duplicating research that they don't realize has already been done.
