Kzatrineczt

The continent south from the Lachendon Empire and the Kingdoms of the Sands is named Kzatrineczt after an ancient Draconic word that roughly translates as belly, stomach, or furnace (the difference between those things is apparently vague with dragons). Most of the land is unexplored wilderness. It may once have been populated, but in the War of Undying, all civilized cultures there were utterly destroyed and the land has remained untamed since.

There are a few sparsely populated regions, however, that have re-emerged from the chaos so many millennia ago.

  • There is a nation of jungle-dwelling peoples in the north, near the base of the untamed Dragon Tail Isthmus, who speak an odd language and have many unfathomable cultural practices.
  • The southern tip is a desert wasteland where some humans and other humanoids live, but it is also home to giant burrowing hive-like insects.
  • Most of the coastal region is a large mountain range that rises steep and very tall; most peaks exceed 12,000 feet (4,000 meters) in altitude. Almost the entire region is covered with a permanent glacial snowpack due to the altitude, and only the lowest valleys are suitable for cultivation. The small city-states in this region often band together against the predations of goblinoids, giants, trolls, rhemoraz, or, in very rare cases, white dragons.
  • The northern portion of the civilized regions is another mountainous region, but lower in altitude, rarely exceeding 8,000 feet (2,500 meters) and with more valleys that reach as low as 1,000 feet in altitude. This region is the most heavily populated with a wide array of small human and demihuman kingdoms generally joined into feudal alliances and a constantly shifting web of political ties and petty squabbles. The constant threat from orcs, ogres, goblinoids, and hill giants are the only thing that keeps the region from devolving into constant internal strife.
  • South and east of the high mountain region is a temperate forest that covers much of the continent, including a huge area of the wild lands. The westernmost corner of that forest is home to another nation, and perhaps the most organized among them. The nation of Kzatireczy is a fully functioning human empire formed from the remnant local armies that remained at the end of the War of Undying. This is, however, a violently isolationist nation that never really recovered from the paranoia at the end of the War of Undying and treats every outsider as an enemy spy. The empire itself is a pleasant and well managed nation with excellent natural resources in a fertile land, but trade or travel outside their borders is nearly unheard of. Their major threats are external, in the form of monstrosities from the wild lands or occasional assaults from the southern desert lands. Internally they mostly deal with minor criminals and banditry, along with the occasional political faction or crime syndicate.
