Code of Cai'relion

The Code of Cai'relion is a set of rules and regulations laid down by The Great Council of mages (which actually includes all forms of spell casters) during the reconstruction at the beginning of the Kingdom Period. It regulates the practice of magic in all civilized lands, and is intended to regulate magic everywhere in the world. The code was created by Cai'relion, a descendent of one of the cousins to elves, called The Ones Who Left to survive the War of Undying and is intended to prevent such horror from ever happening again. The code is very long and complex, but is based on the following core tenets.

This code binds and guides all spell casters, regardless of the source or nature of their abilities.

  1. All spell casters must be identified and identifiable. A divine servant's holy symbol is identification enough, provided it is always visible and prominently displayed. For any arcane practitioner a Wizard Mark is required. This mark will identify the individual as proficient with the use of magic and well versed in the regulations of this code. Failure to display either symbol or mark upon questioning is grounds for immediate and summary execution by whatever means necessary.
  2. Unmarked spell casters, if such be unintentional, shall be marked immediately upon discovery, or destroyed in the manner prescribed for Servants of the Lich if they refuse the mark.
  3. Any magic which binds or enslaves a spirit or soul is to be avoided. The creation of constructs powered by elemental spirits is strongly discouraged and is disapproved by The Source. Such magic is not prohibited, but all civilized nations are encouraged to prohibit, by enactment of appropriate law, the use or creation of constructs.
  4. The Weave exists to protect life from the chaos of raw magic. It is a gift from The Source and must not be bypassed, broken, or distorted. Any individual found to be doing so is to be trained by the nearest college of magic in the proper use and manipulation of The Weave. If that individual refuses this instruction they are to be punished with life imprisonment in the manner prescribed for Associates of the Lich.
  5. The practice of magic is always to be performed in service to, or at least with deference to, the good of society. Any practice of magic, for whatever reason and by whatever means, with the intent or effect of harming the general community of sapient beings, is prohibited and subject to appropriate sanction by the local Council of Magic.
  6. Training in the manipulation of The Weave, or devotion in service to The Source are the only acceptable means of acquiring the skills to manipulate magic. In particular the acceptance of a Pact, Contract, Agreeement, Arrangement, or other Deal with beings of great power that includes the granting of magical ability is an abomination and any being found to have agreed to such a pact is to be destroyed in the manner prescribed for The Children of the Lich. Such destruction is to be overseen by a High Priest of The Source to ensure the full and irreversable destruction of that offender's spirit such that restoration, transfer to an outer plane, tranformation to fiend or celestial, resurrection, or any other continuation of existence, in or by whatever manner or location, is forever impossible without the direct intervention of The Source.
  7. The magic of Unlife is an abomination against The Source, Nature, and all sapient beings. Any practice of this magic is to be treated as an assault upon the entire world and such practitioner must be destroyed in the manner prescribed for Acolytes of Lachendon.
  8. To seek the ritual of Lichdom; create, own, ignore, or fail to destroy a Phylactery; to siphon the souls of innocents for power; to attempt the extension of life through necrotic energy; or any other action associated with the practices necessary to achieve lichdom is the worst and most severe of all crimes against reality itself. Any individual found to be a willing participant in any of these actions is to be treated as a true successor to Lachendon itself, and is to be eradicated, along with all associates, from any and all timeline(s) of reality.
