Ysiil the Windward

The first Windspeaker.

"We are bearers of a great history started by a woman, one not unlike yourself, who was able to see things differently. To do things differently. To change our way of life forever."
— Cassan to a young Ahriin

Listening to the Wind

Not much is known about Ysiil's early life - she was an orphan who lived centuries ago - but she did spend a lot of time not just hearing the wind but listening to it. She became able to predict the weather more accurately than any other and dreamed of taking to the sky like a bird - which eventually, after much trial, error, and injury, she did. Her kite was the first of its kind, allowing a person to fly without the aid of a winged mount as the Skyfarers used to, or as others ride ketzlat in her time and in the present.   With her ability to quickly traverse the Orthlands, she became a messenger. People quickly developed a reverence for her and she became involved in more and more cultural events across all the peoples of the Orth.

Legacy

The lives of the Orth, their culture, and their customs were forever changed by the actions of Ysiil. The presence of Windspeakers - however few in number they may be - have changed the way information traverses the Orthlands and their role in society has influenced all manner of traditions.   Her ambition and achievement have survived the ravages of time, leading to the training of the young Windspeaker, Ahriin of the People of the Dog who has joined the crew of the Ivende because the winds have called her to do so.

The Windrider

The oral history of the Orth records Ysiil with two titles. Windrider - the title used during her life - earned for becoming the first to fly and Windward - used after her disappearance - for it is believed she left Breharan on the wind as her final calling.   Neither title has been used for anyone since, not even any other member of the Windspeakers.   These spoken histories contain all that is known about Ysiil. Any relics that may have existed were either taken with her or lost, including her life quilt - if she ever had one as it was common for orphans to not have one.   It is believed by some that she is still out there, among the skies, flying on the wind and searching for what called her away in her aging years.
