WorldEmber 2025 Pledge

Time for a little walksee.

"The last year I took an opportunity to write about a setting other than Linebound during WorldEmber was 2022 but the time has come once more."
— Paul Norris

A New World

In planning the next game for my group, we have settled on a post-ice-age paleolithic settlement builder survival tabletop role playing game. Now - at least as far as I am aware - no such game exists, so we will have to make it ourselves.   And so the world of Talvorn was born.

The Goal

Talvorn is basically a blank slate and will need everything, a home page, a world primer article, an article for the starting location, articles for some of the major clans, something that defines the neanderthal or early humanesque species the players will belong to. I will aim for ten thousand words but more would certainly not be unwelcome.

The Bingo

Lets see how many spaces I can fill on this bingo sheet to set up Talvorn's first steps into the world for success as I take my first steps into it.
  • Review or collect your writing inspirations: I have filled out the Talvorn meta!
  • Refresh your author page for new readers: It has been a long time since I set up my author page so now it is just a little more up-to-date!
  • Create a moodboard for your world: Picture some rocks and simple finger paintings, images of spring and animals, and a campfire.
  • Review or set up your world home page: Got some simple text one there and am planning the world logo image.
  • Review your category tree: There is now a category tree!
  • Tidy up your writing space: Nice and clean and usable.
  • Define the scope of your WorldEmber: The goal is to create the primer article and begin to define the location and the peoples of the Greatvalley.
  • Review your world primer article: New world. Stub article created, basically a free space.
  • Find an accountability buddy: Done!
  • Get some feedback: Out there and awaiting feedback.
  • Finish all your unfinished articles: Since there are currently no articles on Talvorn, this is a free space.
  • Read a book: I have been reading Kindred: Neanderthal Love, Life, Death and Art as research for this setting.
  • Free Space!: "Everybody gets one."
  • Prepare visual elements: Not much but at least there is a custom header for the articles to default to.
  • Make a list of stubs to expand: These stubs are all new and will be the first articles of the setting!
  • Plan your worldbuilding playlist: I now have over fifteen hours of - mostly - choral music ready to inspire Talvorn with the human voice.
  • Make a list of articles to write: In lieu of a list, I have simply created the first stubs in Talvorn to serve as a jumping off point.
  • Plan your writing schedule: This is an incredibly important one to do in order to maximize success this December. I will have to write after work - and after a shower - but before I choose to do something else; I started playing Expedition 33 this month and that has murdered productivity on more than one day. On days off, writing should happen in the morning and preferably again in the afternoon or evening.
  • What are the people in your world like?: The people of Talvorn are tough, they have survived in spite of the environment, not because of it. The clans may have disagreements from time to time but as individuals and communities they work together to ensure mutual survival. Their beliefs are centered on animals, on seasons, and on other things incredibly important to their survival; things of the world.
  • Do some pre-writing research: I have been watching videos about the creation of stone tools and reading a book about the paleolithic period.
  • Re-read your core articles: As there are no articles, I have instead reviewed the original brainstorming and notes for this new setting.
  • Join the community Already there!
  • Review your world's visual appearance: There is still a long way to go with the Talvorn CSS but there is a new background image, the search bar has been altered, and the fonts have changed.
  • Go for a walk: I have gotten out for a couple little runs this month instead of my usual bike rides.
  • What adjectives describe your world?: Wild, cold, wet, dynamic, changing, primitive, dangerous, big, growing, savage, hostile, adventurous, fantastic, animalistic, and vast.

Goals for 2025

WorldEmber will complete my last writing goal of the year!
Continue the interactive adventure I started in 2024 for Adventure April.
Participate in Summer Camp.
Participate in WorldEmber.

It is safe to say at this point that I will not be biking more this year than last, the wildfires were just too oppressive this summer; I did get a few good rides in though. I have given up on creating my first video, in an era when appearances and voices can be copied so easily with machine learning, I have - at least for the time being - opted not to put more records of myself onto the web. Still have one more custom Magic set to go but it is almost done!
Bike more.
Build a new PC for my brother.
Build a new PC for myself.
Create my first video.
Release four custom Magic sets this year for my friends and I to play.
Survive my move and thrive in my new community.
