Wing

"Gather round everyone. I know we are all still feeling the loss of Farahn but I must introduce Borte, the newest member of the knights and our new wingmate. Like all of us when we joined, she has little experience but great potential. Borte, welcome to the Emperor's finest."
— Skyknight Captain Ghoas Abaagi to her wing

A Squadron of Skyknights

A wing is a group of seven Skyknights, one of which serves as captain. The exception to this is one wing of six Skyknights led by the emperor.   Wings usually act as an independent group, performing any of a wide variety of tasks from military actions to escorting important individuals. On some occasions - primarily military ones - multiple wings can act in unison to overcome the enemy, which they almost always do.

The Making of the Wing

Prior to the Skyknight Reformation there was no limit to the number of active-service Skyknights and each group had no standard compliment. The Reformation established the system of ten wings of seven and an eleventh led directly by the emperor; it also greatly increased the emperor's power in the choice of wing captains in order to avoid another General Rakan.

Mixed Leadership

In the Bral Military, the chain of command is clear and orders flow from the top down. In the Skyknights, this holds true; however, within each wing it does not.   Wing captains accept orders from generals - and occasionally directly from the emperor - and execute those orders. Unlike regular soldiers the captains are often given free-reign on how to accomplish their orders. Most wing captains make plans with the input from all members of their wing, they know the strengths and weaknesses of each member and allow them to contribute from the bottom up.
