"So, why did you pick each of us? No one here is an experienced skysailor, save yourself."
"I can teach you all to sail a ship. I can't change your history and the unique knowledge and perspective you bring to the crew."— Erevard Baxkaltus and Captain Davetti
An Old and New Tradition
Skysailors are the people who operate
skyship, using them to explore the skies, move people and goods between
Breharan and the colonies, and defend against the threat presented by
Stormfleet.
Just as
skyships are based on the water-based vessels of
Tamazee, so too are the skills of a skysailor rooted in those of their water-borne counterparts. The skill sets and knowledge base have evolved since the flight of the
Harani almost seventy years ago, leading to a distinct profession.
Every Child's Dream
During this
Time of Exploration, many children wish they could be skysailors when they grow up - though many see skysailors strictly as
explorers and not as people who operate ships for trade runs to the colonies. The number of
skyships dedicated to exploration is significantly smaller than those used for other purposes but stories of the adventures of the
Harani and her crew - particularly
Darosi and
Ryza - are common stories told to all children.
All the interest in the job has led to quite a bit of competition as there are a very limited number of
skyships and, therefore, a very limited number of spots for crewmembers.

The Sailor's Hat
While
wide-brim hats are still used, the most common head-wear among skysailors is the
tricorne. It offers several benefits to the sailors compared to its predecessor and is often dressed-up in ways unique to the individual and the specific crew.
Part of the Crew
Experienced skysailors have formed their own subculture. These
skycrews are known for their superstitions but mostly for their over-the-top boisterous attitudes, ability to guzzle drink, and wild stories.
"But dad, I want to be a skysailor when I grow up!"
