Kesta Seed

From exotic spice to household staple.

The number of ways to use kesta seeds is as great as the number of people that use it. Crushed, roasted, pickled. As a rub, a topping, a snack. In soups, on fish, and with greens.

The Flow of Spice

Kesta seed comes from the fruit of the kesta tree which is native to Kestatol - the skycontinent from which the lizardfolk hail - though their language has different words for the tree and the seeds of its fruit instead of ones based on the name of their skycontinent.   It has been used by the lizardfolk as far back as their oral history goes but was only introduced to Breharan during the Time of Exploration when some seeds were returned to Darapur by the crew of the skyship Harani. It was initially a very exciting exotic product but in the decades since its introduction it has become a staple item on the tables of the people of Zinato and Burim, is common on the spineward side of Grara, and is making its way into Tamazee.

How to Cook with Kesta

The most common use of kesta seed is in its coarsely ground form where it is used to season meats, flavor soups, or as a topping on eggs or vegetables. It is also roasted and added to salads or vegetables. The least common usage - also the one considered to have the most acquired taste - is pickled seeds eaten as a snack, though this variation is also used as a salad-topper.

Historical Usage

Lizardfolk are carnivorous and don't eat the fruit of the kesta tree, though sometimes they use the juice for flavoring.   The seeds have been used by them for a very long time, mostly as a crushed spice for meat which they will eat raw or cooked, bones and all.   The rest of the fruit is used as bait to lure animals to their trap or into the range of their great bows.   Now the seeds are a valuable resource for trade with Breharan.
