Abandoned Okubo Cinema
The Underground Fighting Ring is a unique spot hidden inside an old, abandoned cinema building right on Sakura Street. The cinema stopped showing movies in 1991, and by 2007, the space was transformed into a gritty underground arena. Inside, two cages stand ready for fights, surrounded by wooden benches packed with spectators. Above the arena is a VIP viewing area, and huge movie screens now show the action instead of films. The place is kept surprisingly clean, stripped down to fit as many people as possible for events.
Most of the fights here happen during the weekly Cosplay Fighting Tournaments, where participants dress up as their favorite characters and imitate their fighting styles. It’s a lively scene, drawing a crowd that fills the place every time. Despite the intense energy, alcohol, drugs, and real weapons are strictly banned, rules enforced after a police raid closed the arena for two years.
Since then, the owners have worked with the police to keep things under control, even offering officers free entry and drinks when they come by. In 2021, the arena gained attention again as it hosted qualifiers for the Victory Road tournament, set to take place in Kamurocho. It’s a gritty, no-nonsense venue with a loyal following and a reputation that’s as intense as the fights themselves.
