The Dragon Gestalt

Ouroboros, also known as the Dragon Gestalt among Coronians, is a dragon from Okean mythos who embodies the spirit of Okean. The first depictions of Ouroboros appeared shortly after the War of Heaven. Ouroboros’ role varies between cultures, with the two most common being the progenitor of the House of Urothenes and an omen of death. Though the latter depiction is considered heretical, it survives among Cerescians, who await the birth of the dragon. In the Coronian version of the myth, Ouroboros is already born and blesses the City of Light with everlasting prosperity.

Summary

Ouroboros’ original name and story come from Cerescian culture and the Dawncaller’s prophecy. When the light of Okean’s core was harvested from the world and given to the people, it was said the darkness of Undertow spilled from a wound in the sea’s depths to consume the remaining soldiers whole. Those that survived were branded by this darkness and cursed to bring misfortune to the Crown for as long as their blood persisted among Okean’s people. Ouroboros would appear in Okean’s darkest hour to bring forth the apocalypse. From the ashes would Okean rise, reborn.

Among Coronians, Ourboros is what light remained after Okean’s core was harvested. They protected the few remaining soldiers and ferried them home. Though Undertow’s light was not originally the Coronians’, they were permitted to keep it so long as they promised to protect it.

Historical Basis

It’s believed that the Cerescian depiction of Ouroboros comes from resentment towards the Coronians. The Cerescians were forced from their homeland and fled to other islands across the world. During a brief period of coexistence, the Cerescians spread their prophecy to the Coronians, who adapted the figure of Ouroboros into a guardian.
