Windswept Willow

Basic Information

Anatomy

The windswept willow is a tree that grows near ponds in the Sunsong forest. This tree's bark is known to have healing properties and can be a powerful pain reliever when distilled into a potion.

Genetics and Reproduction

The tree uses the wind to pollinate other windswept willows, their pollen dusts all the trees around them. The trees then spread their seeds through the wind, releasing thin seeds with wings that travel many yards away from the parent tree. Windswept willow trees have both male and female flowers, but each tree cannot pollinate itself and needs to pollenated and be pollinated by another tree.

Growth Rate & Stages

The windswept willow grows into a sapling after about 3 months, and takes about 12 years to fully grow.

Ecology and Habitats

The windswept willow lives only next to freshwater ponds and lakes, it cannot take root in any moving water. It also prefers a sunny location rather than one shaded by another tree.

Biological Cycle

The windswept willow creates quite a spectacle in winter because, unlike many of the other trees that shed their leaves in winter, the windswept willow prefers to have their leaves frozen solid into chunks of ice.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Raptors have been using this tree for medicine almost as long as Raptors have been living near them. Windswept willow trees often have chunks of their bark missing where Raptors have removed it to be distilled into potions.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

The windswept willow is mostly found on the Water Dragon and Electric Dragon continents. They only grow in wet areas of the continents.

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

The barkbitting beetles chew away at the bark of many different kinds of trees, including the windswept willow tree. They burrow into the tree to lay their eggs and the pupa then feed off of the wood inside the tree.
