Maid-ja'lik (Maid-jay'l-IHK [Maid rhymes with lied])

The maid-ja'lik is a traditional symbol of power, authority and strength on Lexicon. It is a short wand made out of wood with a handle made out narsil that is decorated with elaborate engravings. They are often presented as gifts and awards to people.

Manufacturing process

The design of the maidja'lik is thousands of years old, and remains largely unchanged.   The manufacturing process is as rooted in tradition as the finished product, and can take years to complete. It begins in the time when Roalas is at fixed height, with the craftsman selecting a suitable branch from a javh shrub or a rhaleng dwarf tree and carving a design, usually small and elaborate, into the living wood while it is still attached. The branch is left alone until just before Roalas sets and the long night comes, during which the wood heals and expands the design on its surface. The craftsman must then return to where he found the tree and cut the branch down. The bark is then stripped off and the shaft is straightened out using careful heating in a kiln. It is then dried and stored for around 4 more Lexiconian years. Once that is done, the maidja'lik will be fitted with the elaborately carved narsil handle, which was previously made.

History

Owing how wood is scarce on Lexicon, the Lexiconians associated wood as something special, something that could only be earned, so it's often presented to champions and who are in high positions or held in high esteem in socety, such as Vharat'ono, Losenxagabet'on, or people who've have distinguished service or for eminence in a field of endeavour as a whole or done something worthy or heroic enough to be remembered in the history of Lexicon. It is considered one of the highest honors and things a Lexiconian can receive and earn.   Maid-ja'lik means 'little wood-wand' from maid (wood) + ja'l (wand, staff, stick, rod) + -ik (diminutive), with the jetti in between to indicate true fusion.

Significance

A maid-ja'lik is never bought: it must be earned and received from other people’s hand.   The maid-ja'lik's significance has given rise to many in Lehkcia
