Sentis Greater Boar

One of the greater creature myths, the Greater Boar is integral to the story of Miros and the boar and has been always linked to the nameless god.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The boar is a stocky, marsupial with thick skin and coarse, but sparse hair. With four limbs, and with two toes on each limb, and grooved ankles to resist pushback. As a boar ages, the hair along their spine thickens into a streak that goes from the base of their skull to the tuft on the end of a short but straight tail. They have thick tusks, almost like the trolls, and several forest troll communities have called the boars -troll-like for that reason.

Growth Rate & Stages

Born to a mated pair, baby boar are sired in packs of 4 to 10 (the mother weening their children in pouches along their flanks).
Once too large to stay within the pouch, the juvenile boars stay with their parents, following after a leading parent and protected by a vanguard parent until they reach breeding age where the parents become territorial. During this time a parent will have smaller and smaller clutches, as the mother's hormones affect how many eggs are available to fertilise based on the distance needed to travel to feed all those young, hungry mouths.
Enterprising young juvenile might leave the family pack if travel takes them into areas of the forest without other boar to compete against, though they must watch for predators if they do.
Adult boar start to build more bulked shoulders, making them better built for combat, able to take down forest Creatures and guard their territory as the biggest threat in the area.
At 20 years, a boar's body either naturally dies, or enters a Prime state, frontal shoulders growing obscenely muscled, tusks splitting into two long jagged things, and a massive mane travelling down their necks. Only a few boar reach this stage and myth used to claim these were cursed (or blessed) by the earth itself.

Ecology and Habitats

The Greater boar has two modes of living. The outcroppings of the forests close to the mountains, and the network of limestone caverns largely untouched by sentient hands. Its offputtings fertilise the caverns with rich potential, often carrying seeds deep underground, while the digging tusks expose root bases and release sap in its search for mushrooms and fungi.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The greater boar is omnivorous, with a rich and varied diet including birds, fish, smaller mammals, nuts, fungi, roots and fruit.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

The Greater boar is situated in the forests on eastern Solaris, close to the mountain ranges that lead to the deserts beyond. Its favoured terrain is rocky outcrops within the forests, where often its bulk camouflages in with the black streaked stone it rests upon.

I love that they carry their babies in pouches! Prime boars sound kind of scary though.
