Natare Arboretum/The Grand Sakura Tree

The Arboretum of Natare sits in the centre of the city as the largest single 'building' and green space. It is a collection of samples from all over Levis, grown and labelled around the core of the great Sakura tree.

The land around the sakura tree is so rich and vibrant that the air is full of insects (butterflies and dragonflies mainly but others crawl and skitter in a vibrant ecosystem) and the air is routinely filled with many birds that fail to stay in the city proper.

The panels of the arboretum are semi-transparent membranes that grow from large twisting vines that interlock, the tell-tale bioluminescent flowers growing in symbiosis up their lengths.

The entire garden is tended by the city gardeners, with biologist-mages, gardeners and architects coming every three years to tend to and alter the dome to make it grow better. Structurally the dome is supported by strut trees that ring the great sakura tree, chosen for their ability to hold the weight of the dome equally among them.

Purpose / Function

The arboretum is both public space and community gathering area, with festivals and city meetings happening inside the colored walls. Most famous of this is the harvest festival just before winter, where people wear masks and give gifts of produce before personal crops tend to become more scarce.

Tourism

The Arboretum is the main source of tourism to the city of Natare. While people may come to the academy for study, the arboretum is both a public space that cares not for intelligence and is a wonderous sight to behold.

The Great Sakura Tree

In the centre of the arboretum is the great Sakura tree. For a thousand years prior the grand tree sat unblooming, still large enough to only be contained by two thirds of the arboretum. Recently with bark to skin contact with a human, the tree now yearly blossoms with petals of pink, blue and purple.
