Explorer

A city or major town must issue a permit for a being to become an explorer. Said permit will usually have bounds on what the permit holder can travel and the scope of their capabilities.

The academy or town leader trades information and discovery for goods or tradeables when the explorer returns from a successful journey. The explorer also usually returns with further discoveries from the places they go, so often they have multiple sources of 'income'. This usually offsets the fact that they must leave their garden in fallow, or trade their garden away due to long periods away from their home town.

Explorers are often seen and found with illicit or taboo equipment, collections and habits. These are often looked past for the expansion of what is known, and for the safety of the explorer in question. Examples include sandals and stone and metal artifacts.

An explorer's greatest tool is their circuit ink pot. Most have a supplier for those who travel the lands, and some mage-capability, for the need to scribe and activate the tattoos that serve as their toolkit.   Those with lesser mage-skill often bring physical analogues, though this makes the journey weightier, and more prone to catastrophic failure should disaster arise. The difference between an explorer of Levis and that of the reader is their magic, the permits exist to make sure the stories of Levis explorers don't end like those of the reader's.
