Burning Omens

Demontails are seen in many lights across the mid to lower regions of Levis where they live. Hemmed in by the oceans to the north and the deserts to the east, and with the air getting frostier too far south, the demontail populate a specific band of the Levis continent.

These literal fire-birds have taken on many meanings in the years since the Demon invasion, molded by the watcher's reactions to fire and to the effect they have on the world at large.

Boon of Inferntanis.

To the secret worshippers of the god of fire and birth, the birds are a sign of good luck and prosperity. Often sticking to one tree, their burning effigy surrounded by fast flying birds marks a sign of good things to come. And should instead they be caught in a place with eucalyptus, then that area was obviously too dry and in need of a burn-off, the forest needing a chance to clear and regrow.

Recently, much like the spiders of Aranthme, the Demontails have become a symbol alongside the three headed quoll to symbolise the god of rebirth. Blankets for expecting mothers have begun being stamped with a crude red bird, as a sign of a healthy birth.

Mark of the fire.

On the other hand, many of the non-worshippers who don't live all the way in a major town see the birds as a sign of disaster, and of a reminder of the demons that roam the lands now. While demontails are unique in their being drawn to positive emotions amongst demon-kind, this does mean that sometimes they are attracted towards large parties or joyful rituals. While self regulating in attempting to stop their fires, those of the plains of Levis have begun building quick deploy fire suppression systems and often see Demontails on the horizon as a sign to call a gathering off, much like the reader might for dark clouds.

Those superstitious but not religious have also come to see children born on a day with Demontails as rowdy and hyperactive, a mark of trouble and strife.

City troubles.

The habitable zone of the Demontail falls over Vertus, Natare and Brambleberry most of all, with a slight trapping into the Starberry fields. With all three already with systems in place for fire, it is not the fire-risk that makes a Demontail pack a problem for these settlements. The first problem, is that it is a heavy reminder of the seige on Natare, and the torment the populus spent there, trapped in their own minds and darker wills. The second is the risk posed to any Dreadnaught flight, after a disastrous interaction between the Demontail and the flying frog-creatures, a day where they are seen is often seen as a day where care of trade is needed.

Conclusion

With the Demontail being new to Levis, it is certainly too soon to see all the consequences and superstitions that will come to name them, but should the average citizen of Levis see a Demontail, there is certainly an opinion likely to be going through that head.

I feel like I would be nervous if I saw these roosting nearby, mostly because of the fire.
