The Fungril
The Fungril: Voices of the Mycelial Array
The Fungril are a mysterious and enigmatic heritage of humanoid mushrooms, each individual shaped by the unique environment in which they grow. Their forms range from squat and spongy to tall and spindly, with caps, stalks, and patterns as varied as the flora of the Wetlands. Originating in the lush, damp expanses of the Wetlands, the Fungril possess a profound connection to the natural world and to one another, mediated through the mycelial array—a vast, unseen network that binds them across distances. This connection enables them to communicate instantly with other Fungril and even draw memories and experiences from the remains of the deceased.
Roots in the Wetlands
Nestled within the fertile and humid Wetlands south of the Southern Wilds, the Fungril developed in relative isolation, far removed from the conflicts and politics of the broader world. They formed a society rooted in symbiosis and balance, where the collective good is paramount. Their culture values shared knowledge and mutual support, and their connection through the mycelial array makes them highly collaborative. Memories and wisdom from ancestors are preserved in the array, granting the Fungril a perspective that spans generations.
The Age of Strife: Guardians of Forgotten Knowledge
The Cataclysm marked a turning point for the Fungril. The upheaval disturbed their lands and their array, severing links and forcing them to adapt. As refugees from other lands began to encroach upon the Wetlands, the Fungril chose to form alliances rather than resist. Their inclusion in the Urg’nak Pact was a natural evolution of their symbiotic nature. They provided the Pact with unique abilities—memory retrieval from the dead and strategic communication across vast distances. In exchange, the Pact offered protection and solidarity.
Culture and Communication
The Fungril have no written language; instead, they record their history and pass down knowledge through the mycelial array. They view death not as an end but as a return to the collective, where memories and experiences enrich the community. Their society is decentralized, with decisions made collectively through the network. Individual Fungril are deeply empathetic, their actions guided by the greater good rather than personal ambition.
