The Brotherhood of Arkan

The structure is rather simple. There are no leaders or subjects, there are only the pairs of brothers. Each brother has another brother they are linked to, and they operate in pairs, or multiple pairs together on bigger missions.   Normally they hold control over regiments of regular foot soldiers, using their high levels of magical and military power.

They have no goals themselves, but they are used to vanquish heretics and rebels.

Arkan was once a high level magic user, hired by nobles to rid towns of heretics and rebels. Due to many years of working alone, he had to learn close combat fighting skills, as well as high levels of magic. This was eventually his downfall, as he got more and more overconfident, putting himself in increasingly dangerous situations.   Since his death, a group of men took this way of working to heart, learning the skills of Arkan, but splitting the magic and the fighting into two halves. This was the beginning of the brotherly pairs, where one of the men were more adept at the magic side, while the other was more focused on the fighting and protection side. Both of them were still very strong in the other field, but this meant they could focus on one of the two fields more than the other - to get more specialized, and thereby more powerful.   In the beginning the pairs learned to work together in all types of situations. They learned the other's skillsets and weaknesses, they learned to adapt to each other. They eventually grew like brothers, twins even, two parts of one unit. This developed over the years and they eventually worked so well together that they became sort of linked. If one of them was in danger, the other would feel it and could react, in an attempt to save his brother. But there were limitations to this. It took a tole on them and they sometimes couldn't react fast enough.   Years past with trying to figure out a way to make this link permanent and more potent. They came up with a magical ritual of sacrifice. Each brother had to give up most of their arm. Left for the warrior, right for the mage. This meant they bonded together in blood and spirit, and had to keep the other brother safe, at all times. After the ritual they somehow gained the ability to instantly swap places with their brother - which could save them in many situations or otherwise give them a huge advantage.   After years of practice they extended this ability towards their foes. They learned how to potentially swap places with an enemy, though this proved harder since they are often not willing.
