Thearida Soanis

Thearida Soanis is the current Queen of Urtheon and resides in Soane. She was born into a wealthy urtheonian family and married off to the previous King, who had lost his first wife in childbirth, at a young age. Their son tragically did not survive childhood. Thearida had not been married to the King long when he unfortunately fell ill and died soon after the birth of their only son, Crown Prince Milnor Soanis.

Since Milnor was still an infant and could not yet inherit the throne, Thearida stepped in, officially as an interim regent until the Prince would be old enough to be crowned and rule with a chaperone. In Urtheon, the youngest legal age for a King to be crowned is fourteen years old, if there is a chaperone, nineteen if there is not.

However, when it was time for Thearida to step back and become her son's second in command, she did not. Soon after she refused to give up the throne, a certain Iohan Angeleos appeared on her doorstep, asking for refuge after he was exiled from Eleonis for the murder of his brother, though he did not initially disclose the reason for his banishment.

Thearida chose to allow Iohan in and they soon began to make plans to gather an army and eventually move south against Eleonis. In the beginning, she was a little taken aback by Iohan's merciless methods of warfare, but with time, she began to appreciate their effectiveness and even began to suggest such methods herself. She became devoted to Iohan and eventually married him.

Soon after the wedding, Iohan's nephew Ionathar Angeleos, the young King of Eleonis, showed up in Soane. Somehow, he had heard about their plans to attack his kingdom and wanted to kill Iohan to stop the attack before it started. Of course, killing Iohan would not have been of any use, because Thearida would attack either way.

Iohan was injured in this encounter, so Thearida offered to lead the attack in his stead, but he insisted on leading it himself, even though his healing would give Eleonis time to prepare, as Thearida repeatedly pointed out. Iohan then proceeded to attack the city of Angeleor and suffered a defeat at the hands of the united eleonian armies, who trapped his army and forced him to retreat to Soane and regroup.

Thearida carefully suggested holding back on launching another attack for the foreseeable future, but Iohan was more determined than ever to take over the throne of Eleonis. They used the winter months to assemble their entire forces and, Iohan moved on Angeleor a second time. However, Ionathar Angeleos had not been idle either and had allied himself with the kingdoms Lupear and Aguilear.

At their hands, Iohan's (and therefore Thearida's) forces suffered a crushing defeat outside the gates of Angeleor. Iohan was killed by Ionathar in single combat. Soon, Thearida will face the choice to either fully accept the terms of surrender the victors agreed upon, or to step down as Queen of Urtheon.

Given her determination to not allow Milnor to take the throne, she will be forced to sign the terms of surrender proposed by the Southern Alliance. Thearida is now planning to bide her time and raise Iohan's unborn child to eventually succeed where their father had failed.

As a wealthy man's daughter, a profitable marriage is just about the only way for an urtheonian woman to come to to a position of any importance. For Thearida, marrying the King was more than she had ever dared to hope for.

After her husbands untimely death, she was initially reluctant to take the throne, but when it came time to let go of her power, she could not, but her son was not particularly interested in becoming King, so he did not insist to be crowned.

When Iohan Angeleos showed up in Soane, Thearida played with the thought of sending him away, but when he promised revenge on Eleonis for taking a lot from Urtheon after the Great War, she agreed to help him.

House Soanis had held a grudge against Eleonis ever since the Great War, and this was an opportunity to get back at them. Unfortunately, someone gave critical information to Eleonis. This leak caused Thearida and Iohan to lose the war.

After the war, Thearida found out that Milnor, her own son, had kept Iohan from taking over the south. For Thearida, that was the last straw. She would not step down and allow her traitorous son to take the throne of Urtheon.

She always moved behind the scenes, so it is easy to underestimate her impact on the course of the War of the Lions, but Thearida Soanis had a hand in every single major move and battle on the urtheonian side.
