Crossbow

A crossbow is a projectile weapon used mainly to defend an established position. It combines the basic priciple of a regular bow and arrow with technology that makes it quite powerful and allows precise aim without a lot of practice. Some consider the crossbow the better version of a regular bow and arrow, but in reality both weapons are used for different purposes.

Crossbows use a lever or crank to draw the string back, then the bolt is placed on the string. Finally, the string is released by a trigger mechanism, launching the bolt at its target. Unlike a bow and arrow, which takes years of practice to master, learning to shoot a crossbow is fairly easy. By simply pointing and firing, it is almost impossible to miss the target unless it is moving fast.

Some of the drawbacks compared to a regular bow and arrow is the crossbows considerable lack of flexibility. Due to its heavy draw weight, a crank or lever is necessary to draw the string, so the shooter has to remain stationary or log the equipment around with them. In addition, it takes much longer to reload after every shot. The crossbow might have a more powerful impact over shorter distances, but a bow and arrow has a longer range.

Therefore, crossbows are a great option in the defense of a castle, city or military encampment where there is a wall or fence to hide behind to reload. In situation that require speed, long range and flexibility, such as a battlefield, a regular bow and arrow generally have the advantage. Additionally, when firing volleys of arrows into a crowd of opponents, precise aim is not exactly a priority.
Crossbows are usually made out of wood and reinforced with steel. This combination of materials makes them strong and sturdy, but also slower than a bow and arrow.

Crossbows with their levers or cranks and their trigger mechanisms are counted amongst the more technologically advanced weapons known in Leanor. They are also relatively new compared to other types of weapons.

Technology enthusiasts are often intrigued by the inner workings of crossbows. Unlike swords or bows, which have remained virtually identical for a long time, new and improved versions of crossbows are quite frequently experimented with.
