City Watch
In the kingdoms of Leanor, it is common for cities that are surrounded by walls to have a city watch. The city watch's task is to guard the city gates and walls and keep out unwelcome visitors, and to patrol the streets in order to make sure its inhabitants and guests are safe. In most cities, watchmen are authorized to arrest criminals and people causing trouble in the streets.
Usually, a city watch is part of the army of the kingdom or lordship that their city is located in and has a very similar hierarchy. The members of a city watch are soldiers, so they go through the same training all other soldiers do. Young soldiers often want to join a castle guard if at all possible, as that is the most prestigious military branch, but joining a city watch is also considered quite an honour, especially if a Lord or King resides in the city.
City watch uniforms represent the colours or coat of arms of the city its members are sworn to protect. There are very few exceptions to this rule, the most well-known example likely being the black cloaks worn by the city watch of Mearia, which have nothing to do with the blue and gold of the city. Because of their black uniform, the city watchmen of Mearia are also called the Sea Ravens.
Joining a city watch may be an honour, but city watchmen are often seen as arrogant and egotistic by both civilians and other soldiers, particularly those serving in a King's city.
Most of them probably are not actually like this, but the few who are unfortunately tend to leave much more of an impression than the many who are not.
It is a common assumption that the particularly nasty city watchmen were originally angling for a position on a castle guard but didn't quite cut it and are a little salty about that.
