Aguilear

The kingdom of Aguilear is one of the four kingdoms of Leanor. It is located in the south-west of the region, on the shores of the Silver Sea and the Western Sea. The territory of the kingdom is made up out of four separate Lordships that united into one in 647 CE. Its largest city is Meador, which is commonly known as the capital city of Aguilear even though it is not the kingdom's political centre.

In fact, even though the city was indeed founded by House Meados, the royal line of Aguilear, but never was their residence. Instead, House Meados resides in a castle known as the Eagles Nest, which was built on top of a hill in the Highlands of Meador close to the city. It is unclear whether the castle was named after the coat of arms, which shows a golden eagle on black ground, or whether the coat of arms was chosen because of the castles nickname.

Aguilear as a whole is the smallest of the four kingdoms in Leanor, but it should not be disregarded because of this. In terms of economy and trade, Aguilear is just as important as the other kingdoms, maybe more so. The southern location and maritime climate make its territory well suited to agriculture and farming.

The kingdom's army might be smaller than those of the other three kingdoms, but it is still large enough to make a difference in a battle. Particularly the aguilean navy cannot be ignored, as the eleonians had to learn the hard way during the various wars about the Evening Isles. These wars were eventually resolved, though not by a victory but by a contract between Eleonis and Aguilear.

Aguilear has some of the most interesting and beautiful landscapes in all of Leanor. From the unique sandstone formations in the Highlands of Meador down to the crystal bay, from the rough mountains of the Wall in the east to the cliffs on the western coast, Aguilear is a popular place for wealthy folk to go on vacation and for artists to find inspiration.

The kingdom in general and the city of Meador specifically is a place of cultural significance for the whole of Leanor. The oldest and most revered university of the whole region, where many of the brightest minds in history have studied, stands in Meador. The university's library is an archive of Aguilear's and Leanor's history reaching back at least to the days of the Acadean Empire.
One repeated point of conflict between Aguilear and Eleonis in the early days of the kingdoms of Leanor were the Evening Isles because of their important strategic position at the mouth of the Silver Sea.

Because of this, the Isles belonged to one or the other kingdom. Their allegiance sometimes changed multiple times in just a few years.

After a devastating sea battle in 919 CE, both kingdoms decided that they could not continue to fight about the Evening Isles. They came to an agreement to split the isles evenly between them.

Now, the southern half of the isles belongs to Aguilear, while the northern half is eleonian, but the isles as a whole are one Lordship led by House Mearis that is now counted as part of both kingdoms.

The contract between Eleonis and Aguilear has never been broken in the nearly three hundred years of its existence. In case it ever does happen, the allegiance of House Mearis could potentially decide the war for one side or the other.
