Etappe 4b: Itsy bitsy spider
While the party is still catching their breath after the fight, a man emerges from the woods. Gaius Augustus is on his way to Monferrato to ask for help. He explains to the PCs that a spider nest exists in nearby caves. Normally during the fall period the spiders hatch and its population peaks. Nothing that the local population cannot deal with themselves. This year however there is an alarming high number of spiders. They have ventured further into the woods and are more aggressive than normal. Several villagers of Rodallo have already fallen victim to the strange new threat.
The PCs decide to help Gaius by escorting him to the cave. The route through the forest and hills is actually shorter, but due to the rough terrain it will take half a day longer to reach San Raffaele. They will leave after a good night's rest and meet the coach, that continues along the road, again in San Raffaele.
During the night a pack of hunting spiders attacks the coach. The party, not entirely in armor, maneuvres around to gain tactical advantage. While the driver and his assistant shoot from inside the coach, Raogda, Hendrik, Gortof and Dorfur try to flank the spiders wherever possible. Gaius fires arrows from farther away. A huge spider in the trees above the coach poses another threat. Gortof, enlarged by his belt, rips a leg of the spider, but it holds on with its remaining claws. Eventually, all spiders are defeated.
