Zeva-Nothum
The Zeva-Nothum are the only species of Latani that live in the far north of the Canat Ice Shelf. The people themselves are very tall and slender at around 10 feet tall, with grey skin and four long arms. Their lower bodies resemble a somewhat equine body and legs, 3-toed feet with serrated claws help them in traversing the icy land where they live. This means the Zeva-Nothum have eight limbs in total, four spindly arms and four equine legs. Zeva-Nothum have no eyes, but instead see via infrared vision through an organ in their smooth upper faces. To them, this vision gives them perfect detail and clarity, just in different shades of black, white and gray. They have crests and wide, flat horns of various shapes and sizes atop their heads, shark-like teeth in their wide maws, and they have one claw on their upper pair of hands that that is twice as large as the others, this claw helps them control and cast their unusual demi-magic. Demi-magic refers to very basic and simple forms of magic wielded by only specific species in Latani, only three species in Latani have a type of demi-magic, with the Zeva-Nothum having by far the most powerful and versitile forms of magic native to Latani. Based on reports and research it was found that the Zeva-Notham are able to use the longer claws of their upper arms to tear holes in space. By shouting an incantation phrase and swiping their claws a rift is formed that leads to certain areas of space to use as attacks, such as asteroid feilds, planetary rings, black holes, sun rays and cold vaccums. This power is fully unique to the Zeva-Notham and is considered the most powerful besides the demigods, although it can take them years to find the proper regions in space to tear holes in to apply in combat.
These people are able to survive in the frigid conditions due to their hyperactive metabolisms and their tough, cold-resistant skin. The Zeva-Nothum make full use of their four arms in everyday activities and during times of war, which is almost every day, using their lower arms carry shields or swords while the upper arms make use of their magical energy or wield longer weapons like spears. When donned in full armor, some say they appear to fight like mounted cavalry, and are surprisingly nimble despite the ice and their size.
The majority of the Zeva-Nothum were split into two separate sects more than two hundred years ago and have been at war for dominion of the north ever since. The Zeva sect practice Quintalasism and still cling to their old ways of monarchal rule and believe that their powers were gifts of the gods, as well as their people being born of the gods. The Nothum sect are followers of Vejhim and prefer newer methods of democracy and believe that their magic has always been their own, as well as their people being born from the stars who crashed within a meteor eons ago. Other Zeva-Nothum that have escaped from this civil war have created their own third sect by moving further south to more livable regions of the Rime North, preferring to separate themselves from the pointless struggles of their fellow peoples. Many know the Zeva-Nothum as a proud and regal people regardless of the sect they are part of, who have very high regard for concepts of dignity, honor and respect.
The Zeva-Nothum have had a long and important history with astrology, and most of their culture revolves around the moons, and the stars and their constellations. Thanks to their enhanced infrared vision, they are able to see solar bodies that might otherwise be too blurry or distant for the normal eye to see. The Zeva-Nothum base many concepts on the alignments of the stars and the positions of Latani and Seroma's three moons; horoscopes, mythology, calendaring, superstition, and even prophecy. The largest observatory in both Latani and Seroma is that of the Liritskin Observatory in the Rime North, used by the Zeva-Nothum to track the movements of the stars.
Culture
Common Etiquette rules
Zeva-Nothum are generally very polite and well-spoken, having taken pride in their education and more proper language and mannerisms, which is seen as ironic to some considering two thirds of the species have been fighting in a stubborn and pointless war for over two hundred years.
Common Dress code
Zeva-Nothum typically wear long, thin, flowing silk robes that covers most of their lower bodies, attached via bracelets and neck rings. Jewels and other smoothed stones are embroidered into traditional bracelets, necklaces, earrings and headwear.
Foods & Cuisine
Due to their hyperactive metabolisms keeping them warm in the frozen climates, the Zeva-Nothum need more food every day then the average person, so ice fishing, whaleling and large-scale hunting helps keep communities alive. Usually cooking with simple salt from the ocean and oils from the fatty fish and sea creatures they hunt.
Common Customs, traditions and rituals
New introductions are usually done through a hand kiss or bow, as they believe in proper, formal manners. They also believe that touching another's forehead with their own allows them to see the heat, soul and feelings within someone, so this greeting is usually between friends or couples.
Common Myths and Legends
Many Zeva-Nothum believe that their ancient ancestors were not brought up by the gods, but were instead born among the stars in the cold reaches of space, and later crashing down to Latani within a falling meteorite. They say it is a reason for why they can survive such cold weather despite their thin bodies and why they are so attuned with the stars themselves.
"I had the most intuitive discussions with the Zeva-Nothum of the Rime North, although they warned me not to seek out the separate Zeva and Nothum sects further north, as all they care about is their religions and their everlasting war. I wonder what drove them to such stubborn feuds in the first place? Especially for such a progressive and wise species."F.L.
