The Monoliths

Quite possibly the oldest sapient species on Latani, with paintings and statues of them dating back millennia, depicting them as guardians and builders of old. Monoliths are also by far the largest of the sapient species on Latani, reaching heights anywhere from twenty to fifty feet, with some deceased Monoliths being recorded as even taller than that. Monoliths have hard blue-gray skin that has the appearance of chiseled stone, their legs don't actually end in feet, but rather they narrow down into sharp points, despite this, Monoliths never have any decrease in balance or mobility. The thick, angular heads of the Monoliths are usually adorned with a thick crest of some form or angular horns, both are made from the same stone-like material. Their eyes are different shades of shimmering blue and they have hard, smooth surfaces replacing their mouths. Despite the lack of a mouth, they can mysteriously still speak.   Legend says that Monoliths are not born, but were rather created by the Quintalasist gods to guard sacred sites and to build the first shrines and structures of Latani to make way for the evolution of the other peoples of Latani. This is evident due to the fact that Monoliths don't seem to age, they crumble into stone when killed, and that they have no reproductive systems to speak of. Monoliths never need to eat, never need to sleep, and sometimes they stand still to meditate or pray for hours at a time. Monoliths are extremely rare nowadays, with only six individuals still in existence, the rest have either been killed during great wars, or by targeted attacks from extremists of different faith. Monoliths wield massive weapons of iron and stone, handled with surprising grace.   The living Monoliths have told stories of their past during the Age of Faith, they have said that they were nothing more than mindless servants that did whatever was commanded of them by the gods and demigods of the Quintalasist pantheon, but after the events of the Demigod Massacre, the gods decided to relinquish them of their duties and give them free will to do as they desired. Most decided to stay at their given posts, but others decided to live a new life of their own. Today, one Monolith guards the magical shrines of Shrine Island, another stands post at a mysterious portal on Spirit Island, another guards the most sacred shrine of Quintalasism in the Arna Shield, another keeps watch over the great library of Vena, and the last two wander Latani of their own volition. However, all six of them collectively pray for the day that the gods return to create more of their kind or give then new purpose.

Art & Architecture

The Monoliths are responsible for a majority of Latani's ancient structures and statues. The visages of the gods and demi-gods were first carved into stone by the Monoliths, scattered across the various regions, along with the first temples and shrines.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

All Monoliths are extremely religious to Quintalasism, declaring that they were created by the very gods themselves. They pray for hours a day, devote their lives to protect sacred sites and they do not affiliate themselves with those of other religions.

Funerary and Memorial customs

In certain areas in Latani there are sites where Monoliths have died, now looking like nothing more than broken, crumbling statues upon the ground. Followers of Quintalasism often flock to these sites to pray, pay respects, and decorate the stone corpses as a way to make offerings to the Monoliths and to the gods.
"Living, breathing historical and religious monuments, and perhaps the greatest beings to have ever existed on Latani. Their wisdom and power is breathtaking, now forever living in my memory."
