The Great Banishment
On the planet of Seroma, there exists magic that is hewn to an individuals DNA, there are 8 variations of this magic based of various elements, Fire, Water, Earth, Nature, Air, Energy, Light and Dark. The element of dark magic had been feared and somewhat shunned by the people of Seroma ever since it's discovery. Some dark magic spells have the ability to nullify other's magic, raise the dead, manipulate minds, and was generally considered one of the most powerful in terms of offencive power. Due to this, for many years prior to the event that would be infamously known as the Great Banishment, contempt and resentment brewed for those who wielded dark magic, though such feelings in the community was subtle at the time.
As society on Seroma grew more and more accepting and reliant on magic and magical abilities, so too did the birth defect of Magic Overload, a genetic disorder that gives the body an overabundance of the magic gene normally found in magic users. Magic overload causes those with it to either die off in a destructive release of energy when they are born or in early childhood, or they are completely overtaken by their magic and loose control of their bodies, transforming into destructive beasts of magic that attack everything in sight. Those with dark magic develop this defect more than any of the other magic types, leading to them being even more feared and distrusted. Not helping the political and social situation was Darklord Kaste, the at the time current representitive for the people of dark magic. Darklord Kaste was a very passive leader, great with finances, trade and making comfortable life for his citizens, but not as vocal with debates and political pushback. Kaste also advocated for a less magic-focued society, believing that people might become lazy, divided, dangerous, and that more research should be done to better understand magic's effects on the world. This viewpoint was obviously controversial and didn't help to improve his public image.
The final straw that would eventually tip the scales for the fate of the dark users was a young woman by the name of Sora Wingard, the newly appointed ruler of light magic. With unparalelled charisma, Sora's goal of complete leadership, more religious focus, magic in all aspects of society, and public safety began. Sora viewed those with dark magic as a threat to her vision of Seroma, a thought not helped by her direct fear of the potential of their magic, especially their battle spells and magic nullifiction. Sora started subtle with appealing to the other rulers and gaining huge public reputation and admiration with her policies and influential presence, over the years eventually leading to scapegoating, misinformation, and all out protesting against the people of dark magic, labeling them and their powers as evil and unstable. Stress and pressure build within the population of dark magic users and finally after a failed inserection to remove Sora from office and two back to back dark Magic Overload events, Sora finally gave the order for the Great Banishment.
Everyone who had dark magic or a lineage of dark magic was rounded up across the lands of Seroma with Sora stating it to be merely a relocation project, claiming it was for the betterment of the world and for the safety of both groups. What wasn't initially apparent to everyone was the place Sora and the other rulers planned to send them, the neigboring planet hanging overhead in Seroma's sky, a place that in rumor, stories and religious text is said to be a relm of monsters, death and traitorous gods. Latani. The only current way to effectively get to Latani was through a specific light magic spell called Pillars of Light, a teleporter that envelops a target in a beam of light and transported somewhere else. Though because of the distance between the nearby planets and due to the vast number of people per banishment, dozens of light magic users who knew the spell had to be used in each area a banishment was taking place. It was like a grand event, all across Seroma large groups of dark magic users and their families were rounded up in plazas and city centers to be banished to the monstrous deathworld of Latani. It was like a tragic specticle, crowds gathered to watch with cheers or sullen silence as the pleading and begging people of dark magic were shot up into the sky toward their new home in massive glowing white pillars. The sky was filled with dozens of these pillars as the Great Banishment occured that day dooming a whole population to their unknown fate on Latani.
It has been 25 years since the event, and the indigenous residents of Latani tend to call the incident The Forsaken Arrival. The Great Banishment is perhaps one of the most important and influential events in the recent history of both Latani and Seroma. In Latani, the arrival of the humans sparked the War of Flesh and Scales, the death of a demigod and the establishment of the Third Reform era. On Seroma, Sora rose to a level of power even above the elemental rulers and their government, becoming a pseudo-Queen of sorts in the eyes of the populace after her great show of power and influence during her banishment plan for the safety of her people. Life on Seroma became more magic-focused, but due to this, the ecology became stagnant with the element of dark missing and became oversaturated with magic.
