Raptors
The Raptors are a reptilian race from almost all corners of Latani. Raptors are characterized as reassembling bipedal lizards or wingless dragons by their scaled hides, oblong heads, muscled tails and sharp teeth and claws. The many tribes around the continent hold their own distinct physical features and cultural attributes.
Plains Tribes: Plains Raptors (or War Raptors as referred to by other tribes) are usually grey or black in scale color with shorter snouts and longer tails than that of other Raptors, they stand at around 6-7 feet. The Plains Raptors hold a historical love for warfare and train their children at a very young age to be built as the perfect warriors, as such the Plains Raptors are some of the greatest warriors in all Latani. Despite this, the Plains Raptors are low in number for their habit of starting fights and joining wars that sometimes aren't even their own, wishing to become dragons after death through their unquestioned devotion to Draconic Rebirth. This obsession for death, war and reincarnation is often seen as martyrdom, even to other Raptors.
Northern Tribes: With slight resemblance to that of toads with their wide faces and shorter tails, the Northern Raptors are the shortest Raptors, standing around 5 feet. Northern Raptors have retractable teeth, orange to brown scales, and short, dull, brown horns on their heads. The Northern Raptors have mastered the cold elements of the north, their crafting in furs is unlike anywhere else and are among some of the best hunters and fishers in Latani.
Desert Tribes: With wide, thorny scales in colors of brown, orange and yellow, the Desert Tribes (or Sand Raptors) blend in perfectly with their sandy environment, which they use to their advantage to ambush unsuspecting foes. Their tails are very thick for helping store moisture, as well as spiny for deterring predators, another distinguishing feature is their wide heads and large eyes. The Desert Raptors are obsessed with the concept of knighthood ever since the concept was first introduced to them by the humans and have since integrated it into their culture (even though knighthood practice had stopped in human culture years ago), so now it is common to see Desert Raptors referring to each other as ser as well as crafting fancier armors and weapons then they did before.
Forest Tribes: The most common form of Raptor, they sport two smooth white horns, pointed ears, and powerful tails. Their thick scales come in shades of grey, dark green, navy blue and brown, or some variation of such. With villages bordering forests all across Latani, the Forest Raptors are renowned hunters, warriors and craftsmen. They were some of the first to assist the humans when they first descended within the great pillars of light in the event known as The Forsaken Arrival.
Mountain Tribes: Mountain Raptors most resemble crocodilians, with heavy scale plating, ridged backs and tails, and muscled jaws. Mountain Raptors are colored grey, black or green and have a swathe of short, upward curving horns on their heads and necks. The Mountain Raptors are the largest and strongest of the Raptor tribes, standing around 7 feet tall. The Mountain Tribes are extremely religious, devoting their entire lives to Draconic Rebirth and the dragons. During the War of Flesh and Scales, the Mountain Raptors took sides with Ledoux and his forces, and after his defeat, they sealed themselves away from the rest of the world in their mountain fortresses. Years of isolation and resentment have led the Mountain Raptors to be very xenophobic, especially toward other Raptor tribes, to them, the other Raptors are traitors; stay away from them at all costs.
Naming Traditions
Unisex names
Typically, Raptors hold long and complex family names only used formally in family occasions or in other serious events or situations. To avoid complicated greetings and holding family respect, Raptors are instead given simple nicknames to be used casually between individuals, such as Razor-tooth, Stone-head, Big-tail, etc. These names are given at an early age by themselves or collectively by others based on specific qualities of the individual.
Culture
Shared customary codes and values
Some aspects are still shared collectively between all the various Raptor tribes. Raptors believe in honor, loyalty and strength, as well as family ties and companionship.
Common Dress code
Most Raptors prefer to go shirtless to show off their bodies, but others prefer the use of vests in many forms and designs, which is the most common article of clothing you will find on a Raptor other than their baggy trousers. Raptors also wear travel packs at the base of their tails for extra storage, and some wear fancy "tail socks" to wear around their tails as a form of fashion.
"Probably the most abundant race in Latani due to their adaptiveness to the various environments around them, eventually leading some to evolving into different forms to compensate and better survive the unforgiving world of Latani."F.L.
