Belbur

The Belbur are a semi-aquatic race from the coasts of both eastern and western Latani. The Belbur are arguably the most monstrous looking of all the sapient species on Latani, they are approximately 40 feet long from their noses to the tips of their long tails and they tower 8 feet tall to the top of their slightly humped backs. Their smooth, thick, blubbery skin helps them resist the freezing temperatures of the ocean and snowy northern climates. Their skin comes in colors of grey and white with streaks of blue along their bodies. Their arrow-shaped heads hold black eyes and complex, multi-jointed jaws that open to show a hideous maw of huge, obsidian-black fangs for catching fish, including two especially large fangs on the sides of the jaw like mandibles. Most of the time these hooked teeth are hidden from view, when a Belbur's jaws are closed the fangs fold inward into their mouths, then they open outward as a Belbur opens and flexes their complex jaw ligaments. The muscular tails of the Belbur are shaped like paddles, with a tough length of cartilage running along the top and bottom of the long tail. These tails are perfect for swimming, and it propels the Belbur through the water at astounding speeds despite their large size. The front limbs of the Belbur are disproportionately longer than that of their thick legs, so the Belbur walk on their padded knuckles with their elbows raised in the air. Their long, clawed fingers are webbed for extra mobility in the water.   Belbur often lead solitary, peaceful lives both in and out of the water, Belbur can use their large, highly efficient lungs to hold their breath for half an hour at a time, which helps them fish and collect valuable materials from deep beneath the ocean. Despite being a sapient race, the Belbur have no villages, towns, or complex infrastructure to speak of, and they don't wear any form of clothing, as they find it restricting and unnecessary (thankfully their discretionary bits normally stay within their bodies), those that do wear clothing is usually by their own volition. To communicate underwater, the Belbur use a form of sonar which can be picked up by other Belbur from up to 20 kilometers away. Their long prehensile tongues are tipped with sensory buds to pick up scents and other various chemical signals underwater. Because their front arms are so long, the Belbur can only use gauntlet-type weapons, weapons like swords or spears are too awkward to use efficiently. The Belbur do have a Queen, although it is mostly as a formality with little control over the Belbur populace, her job is mostly to be a spokesperson and order trade decisions. Despite their animalistic lifestyles and uneventful community, Belbur are the most important and impactful traders in all Latani, mostly due to their efficient access to seafood, salt, pearls, and other collectable ocean resources, along with their ability to deliver goods to any costal region by water.

Culture

Art & Architecture

The only form of art the Belbur like to take part in are collective inukshuks of dead coral made along coastlines, called Okers. If a Belbur comes across one of these Oker sites, they simply add their own creation to the collection. Some Okers span for kilometers along with thousandths of different entries from different Belbur.

Foods & Cuisine

Belbur eat raw seafoods and not much else, they are pure predatory carnivores.

Ideals

Relationship Ideals

Belbur come together to bear children only about three times in their entire lives, usually a male and female will meet up, have a family, raise their children until they are ready to venture out on their own, and then up to go their separate ways again. This casual way of courtship can be seen as odd to some, but seen as easier and uncomplicated to the Belbur, after all, why stay with only one person your whole life at all times? Children are taught about survival and the harsh realities of the world early to prepare them for life on their own in the dangerous lands of Latani.
"I have only ever met two Belbur my whole life, both were on accident. They were both undisturbed by my nosy presence and were cooperative with my questions. Despite their amazing biology paired with their sentience, the rest of their culture is largely non-existent. As a side note, seeing a Belbur yawn is horrifying."
