There is a place between the worlds, a Void filled with beings none can understand. This place is dying. The Voidbeasts grow restless and hungry. We do not know what is doing this. We cannot stop it. The end of everything is slowly creeping toward us. We do not know how much time we have left. We cannot know. Is this what the shape of Hell is?
Facing the oncoming end, the last Sapients in existence stand witness to the last of civilization. The worlds are stretched far beyond all understanding, the stars are distant and dim. The Darkness between them is impossible to cross without specialized devices. Still, the Sapients travel.
They travel for many reasons. To escape to somewhere they believe is better, to see the worlds before the collapse, to conquer in a desperate attempt to have any measure of control, to spread a message of hope, to try and save those remaining Sapients, and so many more.
There are some collections of worlds still held together under a single banner. Those banners include the Empire of Blood, the Bringers of the Light, the Endless Worlds, and more.
But not all is hopeless. Even as the end approaches, there is love to be shared and happiness to be experienced. There is still time left, even now. Even for us. Even over great distances, we are able to stand together.
Travel through the Darkness being nearly impossible means that travel between worlds is done via portals that launch Sapients through the Void. The Void is little understood and thought to be another layer of reality.
There are beings in the Void between, hungry and drifting. They used to feed easily, but slowly it has become harder and harder for them to find the food they need to survive. They are dying too, but their deaths are vicious and dangerous to the Sapients.
Some fear that the Voidbeasts will someday break through the walls of the Void into reality. Others claim that is impossible by the very nature of the Voidbeasts. Only time will tell.
Civilizations mostly exist deep underground, burrowed near the cores of planets to harvest as much warmth as possible. It is so very rare for a planet to be near enough to a star to stand on the surface of the world. The vast sky, empty of all light, is a sight very few will ever actually lay eyes on.
We know the end is here. There is no denying it. The only question remaining is what we are willing to spend our time remaining on. Maybe we won't see the end of it all, maybe it will be our children. Or their children. Whenever it comes, the end is inevitable now.
Welcome to the end of everything.
