Session 21: The Fair Comes to Town Report
General Summary
With the party now responsible for the fall from grace of no fewer than two Risuri nobles, Lady Inspectress Margaret Saxby has ordered the party off of further research into Reed Macbannin's corruption and onto separate, unrelated cases.
The Kaybeau Armament and Technology Exposition has come to
Flint. The outdoor festival showcases amateur inventors and giants of
the new industrial revolution as they display their creations with great
pomp and spectacle. Pavilions
boast the latest miracle of technology, from precision ballistics,
to steam-powered armor, to clockwork pianos that play themselves.
Vendors and fair-goers of all nations and races cram the aisles to see
wonders once limited to the workshops of wizards and the vaults of
kings.
It is hot, crowded, and littered with experimental weapons. What
could possibly go wrong?
The party has orders to look into any significant threat to Flint or Risur, including arms smuggling, notable black market trading, and foreign spies. One significant early find was a small keg of witchoil.
The second significant early find was a golden staff that appeared to summon extradimensional entities that immediately tried to feed on the people of Flint!
Fighting these entities was anything but easy. They primarily appeared to be incorporeal, or something like incorporeal, in all but a few rare circumstances. The combat occurred right outside the ammunition sales tent, however, with enchanted arrows and bullets inside. Eventually, the creatures were all brought down before they could escape into the greater city.
The mage using the staff had just received it earlier that day, from a black market seller of magical goods. Attempts to magically identify the staff only returned a description of certain spells and abilities that notably did not include summoning indescribable entities from another dimension.
