Founded on the simple premise that explosive ore can earn a great amount of money, Orby's Borers focuses solely on the safe and efficient harvest of the creatively named 'Pop Ore'. Through many failed experiments, Orbas and his team eventually developed a method of rendering the ore into an inert powdery substance dubbed 'Pop Powder'. Pop Powder quickly became a revolutionary tool for uses in mining, metallurgy, warfare, and (in some brave instances) cooking.   Several decades after Orbas' death in 642 ER, the metallurgists of Orby's Borers invented a way of smelting Pop Ore into weapons. Pop Ore weapons are normally inert until making a hard impact with their target, upon which a small yet powerful explosion is released. The impact weapon technology was kept top secret for many years as the metallurgists developed ways to make the weapons stand up to their own explosions. However, in 677 ER Orby's Borers made an offer to the Nisean Capitol Bank for the exclusive sale of Impact Lances for the Capitol's forces in exchange for lowered tariff rates on Pop Powder exports; to which the Bank hastily agreed.

After centuries of constant mining, all of the known Pop Ore deposits on Iothea Isle have begun to deplete. Orbytos surveyors have begun aggressive searches for new deposits only to result in equally aggressive retaliation from the native species. While Iothea Isle is abundant in sources for food and shelter, without the assured continued income from Pop Powder exports the workers of Orby's Borers have little reason to remain on the remote island.
