Dawnyear

Formally known as Eurstelys, Dawnyear celebrates the day that Eoa the Rainbow pierced his father Skeinor's stormclouds and brought Raya's light to the world, beginning all life.  This is the first day of the year according to calendars of the Lands of Legend.  Seeing a natural rainbow on this day is considered especially lucky.

Execution

The holiday starts just after sunrise.  After the final prayer of thanksgiving to Raya for returning her light to the world, celebrants return to their homes.  While Kindlemas is about community, Eurstelys focuses on family.  After breaking their fast with simple foods, typically cold foods like yogurt with berries and clear water, families will go to sleep for the morning.     At midday, churches dedicated to Raya will toll 6 times, one for every color of the rainbow.  The faithful will rise and head to church for a brief service, a reading of the legend of Eoa piercing his father's stormclouds to bring light to the world.  As part of that service, celebrants will write out intentions for the new year on a piece of parchment, which are then given to children wearing long white linen smocks and rainbow cords around their heads like a circlet.  The children will then take all of the intentions in colored bags and run them around the community.  During this play, children will search the community for bowls of colored paint and upon finding one, will make a handprint of the colored paint on their white smock.   Predictably, this often gets rowdy and chaotic, with children frquently getting covered in paint before finding every color and adding it to their smock.  After coloring their smock with every color, children will return the bags with the written intentions to the chief acolyte, who will burn them in a private ceremony.   While the children play, adults will return home after the brief religious service and clean their homes, a practice known as "sweeping out last year's shadows."  Many celebrants will name old grudges during this task, forgiving them as they "sweep them away."  Many people will begin a new project, such as starting a craft or mending old family items, as Eurstelys is considered an auspicious day to start or end something.   In several nations, new laws are announced on Eurstelys.  Adventurers and explorers will frequently start a journey or quest on this day.   After sunset, familes will gather to share a traditional meal of Rainbow Root Salad, made from roasted slices of brightly colored roots—golden beet, ruby carrot, blue turnip, white radish—dressed in a citrus-herb glaze, followed by a centerpiece stew made from the leftovers from the previous night's Kindlemas celebration, seasoned with sunburst spices—coriander, orange peel, lemon, and cracked pepper, and baked yam and sweet potato.  Some families will bake a round fruit tart covered with concentric rings of brightly colored berries for dessert.
