Ten Families

The Ten Families were a cartel of families that had each had a presence in the Long Rim since traffic to and from the Dawnline Shore began. This age, combined with their power and ubiquity, resulted in their agents commanding nearly unchallenged deference. The Ten Families directly controlled a very large number of stations, but possessed a disproportionately small amount of permanent military agents, which was made up for by their mercenary-hiring capacity and number of connections.   The Ten Families maintained a major network of signatory stations known as the Golden Compact. Regardless of whether or not a Golden Compact station was owned by the Families, its local currency's exchange rate was strengthened compared to non-signatory currencies via Familial backing. Similarly, the Ten Families maintained a polycurrency known as Script, which was universally accepted as legal tender throughout the Golden Compact.
