Summer Camp 2024 Pledge

(Spoilers For My Players in the Falling Pride Campaign)

Week 1: Change

Assignment 1

The first theme of "change" fits in well with the first campaign I am currently running in Laminarum titled "Falling Pride." I hope to use the summer camp challenge to write about the changes taking place behind the walls of BrillĂ© as its theocratic dictatorship begins facing crises against the outside world. With cultural shifts, financial struggles, and more factions shaking the nation's foundation than ever, I think it will be the perfect subject for the theme of change. Further, with their rising position in global relevance, BrillĂ© could change the status quo of trade forever by helping Roja break the Renad-pai Relief Act: a shift that would have world-changing economic implications.

Assignment 2

While I got the diamond badge last year, I'm shooting for the gold this time. With my first Laminarum campaign finally in the works, school, and a new job all on my plate, gold should be more feasible. Hopefully, I'll get enough inspiration to write even more and I'm excited to see the prompts.

Assignment 3

My tags and categories are... a work in progress. Getting Laminarum revised and organized has been my longest ongoing challenge and I'll likely be putting in the work to fully organize my world throughout preparation and into the competition. The main page certainly leaves a lot to be desired at present, but over the next 2 months, I hope to have it looking pristine and accessible.

Assignment 4

Meta? A year and a half of writing and this is the first I'm hearing of it. Time to remedy that. While I think my world has a somewhat succinct purpose and goals, I think I can write it more concisely.

Week 2: Refuge

Assignment 1

I hope to use the theme of refuge to explore faith in Laminarum. From charitable organizations to the saints of old, the world needs sources of charity in trying times. Given that I run D&D games, I've seen paladins presented as heroes of faith without much backing that ideal beyond serving the goals of their tenets. I will use the theme of refuge to show how these individuals can serve the common people. While there may not be heroes in this category who have saved the world, there will be a focus on less-remembered names; whether it's a knight of Silset delivering food to a village during a cold winter, a paladin delivering a child, or temples giving the destitute a place to sleep, these articles will show that Laminarum can provide refuge in dark times.

Assignment 2

My community tends to be my D&D crew. Each member has some degree of worldbuilding experience, but they've each run a campaign, which is ultimately the purpose of Laminarum. They were around for me to pitch ideas this year and they'll certainly be around for this competition as well.

Assignment 3

I consider styling to be one of the most important aspects of worldbuilding. While I wish I could afford real art, the vast majority of my articles use AI-generated art. While that does enhance the reading experience of the world, I hope to finally add some real art that I've utilized in my D&D campaign during this competition. Otherwise, most of my world is still in the styling phase as I revise.

Assignment 4

I learned most of my CSS during last year's competition, and I hope to apply that knowledge to the rest of my world in the revision phase (as well as my upcoming articles). While I haven't achieved some of the incredible feats I've seen in other worlds, I'm currently happy with my level of styling, but maybe I'll find the time one day to upgrade Laminarum further.

Week 3: Belief

Assignment 1

While there's plenty to delve into with the religious beliefs of Laminarum, I already plan on using the articles regarding refuge to explore the faith of my world. Instead, I'll try to explore beliefs in the form of factions, historical perspectives, and theories on mysteries of the cosmos. This theme could help develop Laminarum beyond its current broad perspective with regard to organizations.

Assignment 2

Given that I use Laminarum to run D&D campaigns, I'm always collecting songs and soundtracks to use in sessions. I currently have most of the inspiration I need through music and otherwise enjoy applying what I've learned in ecology to develop that natural world. Listening to music alone should help me write during this competition since I'll be adding new articles that correspond with the campaign I'm currently running (and that's the music I'll be listening to while I write).

Assignment 3

While I mostly have AI art at present, I hope to add the real art I've commissioned to some of my articles for this competition. Otherwise, I've collected plenty to use in any given article I might write this year. As for my map, I've gotten the Laminarum world map to a state that I'm happy with. Hopefully, I'll get the opportunity to focus more on the continent of Belenad.

Assignment 4

While my inspirations changed plenty in the early days, the foundations of my world have been consistent for a while, especially as I've started ironing out more details of the cosmology and completed the history of the world (with the option for smaller additions still open).

Week 4: Decay

Assignment 1

I could delve into several forms of decay for Summer Camp, taking advantage of a broad range of subjects. I think that the decay of civilization during the era of Ettermiddag, the fall of the Snow Rock Saltkrigere, and various forms of magic will allow me to give a well-rounded approach to the theme.

Assignment 2

My environment is mostly prepared, though staying on the go this month means I'll write in several unfamiliar places. Things that can stay consistent between my spaces, like music, have been about the same for several weeks.

Assignment 3

Setting up my homepage has been an insurmountable task for a while. While the frame is all there, I just need to begin adding the proper details under my categories and drop-downs. Unfortunately, that will require too much writing and inspiration for me to muster before the competition begins; however, I still plan on filling out as much as I can from my main three categories: Histories, World Atlas, and Cosmology.

Assignment 4

While I'll need to devote most of my time to the homepage, I hope to eventually write up my author and world introduction page. At present, getting the world in a usable state for my purposes is the most important thing, but I'd like for my current and future followers to know my background a little better. I think the background of worldbuilders can often inform the reader about what the world represents and what experiences led to its creation, so it's definitely on my to do list.
