History
The city of Zahret gained its prominence following the collapse of the Podrusan Empire. Zahret's ruler, the Podrusan Lord Mohksa waged a war against the ailing giant and dealt the final blow to the Empire, annexing its remaining lands by 252 AR. Zahret at that time was the home of a new religion, Zermourism, that worshipped a single deity who stood in stark contrast to the ancient Podrusan Pantheon. Mohksa soon established the Zahretian Caliphate and became the first Holy Caliph, championing Zemourism. As Zemourism spread to more cities and regions, its followers became more militant, keen on replacing the ignorant Podrusan Pantheon with the truth and light of Zemour. The Imperial Civil War
Caliph Hamduur II reigned mere months before his brother personally assassinated him and assumed the throne in 504 AR. Prior to Hamduur II's ascension, the armies of Zahret had laid down their arms under the last decree titled "Recovery" by Caliph Walid. Political ascension was now possible for Hamduur II's brother - Merkwah, who assumed the name Hamduur III upon his own rise to the throne. Hamduur III raised the armies once again, and called them forth to his side to concentrate his power. However, other family members commanded a part of these armies - many being accomplished generals. Hamduur was killed within the year by the first general, Uwais, who responded to the abrupt call to arms and investigated Hamduur II's death. Uwais once again returned the armies to rest, but was instead met with a full civil war on his hands. Empowered by their own loyal armies, Uwais was forced to defend the Zahretian Caliphate from his kinsmen. Within 20 years, the throne sat six rulers, finally ending with Yazid II who restored stability once more. It would be his successor, Walid II, who would bring Zahret to its height. Following the civil war, the Zahretian Caliphate became a contributing factor to The Great Pax across Kronis from approximately 550 AR to 650 AR. The period of stability allowed the Podrusan arts to flourish, and the Caliphate experienced its golden age.Collapse
In the waning years of the Empire, the Caliphate found itself succumbing increasingly to rebellion and civil strife. The Imperial Civil War had codified new laws intended to protect the royal line from further damage. However a series of short reigns post 660 AR resulted in a lack of military oversight. First, a random assortment of Dresnids migrating across the Dan Verig Mountains on the Caliphate's borders caused a series of devastating raids on farmland and even upon walled cities that the Caliphs were unable to effectively repel. These Dresnid raids lasted decades, emerging in cycles. Then the Zahretian Caliphate lost many key battles to local rebels that it should have otherwise won. Soon entire tribes and clans united and declared independence from the Caliphate, and the domain was but a shadow of its former self by 700 AR.
