The Madness
Little is known of this colloquially referenced ailment known as The Madness. It is however incredibly prominent in The Age of Madness, granting the era its namesake due to it's increasingly prevalent effects. Though exactly what the ailment entails is unknown, as well as its source, place of origin, or even a form of treatment, a handful of things are indeed certain however. Whatever it may be, it's effects worsened when the twilight of The Material Plane blanketed its skies, with many believing it to be a symptom of this worsening, unnatural poison of the realm. Another truth is that it hinders restoration magic, making deaths permanent and resurrections cannot take place, in addition, it is most well known for bringing forth creatures known as Vilebloods. These creatures ravaged the lands of The Material Plane, having been the growing horrors that Vrellez struggled and eventually failed to push back throughout the years of The Twilight War. These Vilebloods now being common place in The Material Plane, and ever increasingly more dangerous. Finally, The Madness twists the minds of The Material Plane's peoples, and even carries the capability of twisting their still living bodies into Vilebloods. Whatever it is, this supernatural scourge eats at Aio like a festering wound, and slowly digs itself throughout it's interwoven multiverse.
It is the effects of The Madness that are also attributed to the lack of godly intervention across The Material Plane since the blanket of twilight fell over the skies. Though it is unclear what horror dims the Pantheon's light, all that is certain is that it's peoples are on their own, seemingly destined to suffer, by the whim of whatever creatures peers their head from the endless beyond. That being said, few gods, those of death and undeath, those of madness and strife, they strive in the climate, with few even bearing influence still, though the inconsistancy of the affected domains point toward a different connection, one that's yet to be uncovered.
Transmission & Vectors
Unknown, Though it seems to target the mind, moving it's way to the body, and targeting indiscriminately.
Causes
Unknown, though whatever it might be, it seems unnatural and twisted, something of a rotten origin, which corrupts indiscriminately and painfully.
Symptoms
Those affected by The Madness display the roots of psychological deterioration, ranging from schizophrenia to a severe, lingering depression. Though the effects are varied and largely unique to the affected, one thing is certain, it begins by corrupting the mind, breaking it with it's own thoughts and horrors. The especially unlucky however, suffer through a transformation into a Vileblood. These creatures carry many names, "Night Creatures", the "Twilight Scourge", or the "Children of Blood" to name a few, however many alias' they carry though, a transformation from a living humanoid to Vileblood is quite rare, and often takes a form close to that of the humanoid, be it Vampire, Werewolf or a more dramatic twist, it is nonetheless a slow and gradual transformation, and one that is only complete when a single monstrous act is committed, be it to gorge on the flesh of their kin, or to sell a child to higher power, these transformations can turn Humanoid to Vileblood given their progression under The Madness' influence is well enough developed. Regardless of how rare these transformations are however, something else spawns these horrid beasts in more aberrant or beastly forms, whatever it may be, they infest the lands of The Material Plane.
These being the various stages previously seen on the living, it perhaps most notably affects the dead, causing bodies to rise as undead. In addition, it has dulled and rotted the land, greying plants and blackening the sea. It is unknown what becomes of the souls of the dead, but it is clear that contact to them has long since faded, as their souls respond not to spells that would normally return the spirit to the body.
Treatment
Unknown, though widely researched.
Prognosis
The course is inconsistent and erratic, though the one thing that is sure to happen, is the corroded mind of the affected. With their physical shift being a horrid extreme.
Affected Groups
Life as it is known. Flora, Fauna, sentient or not, this blighted curse twists all once it's influence spreads enough.
Hosts & Carriers
Unknown.
Prevention
No clear prevention has been found as of yet, many pray for their safety, though that brings calm only to the mind. There is a superstition however, that certain sigils of The Blood Hunters and dedicated demonologists ward off the effects to some degree. There is no proof to show this function however. Additionally, another widely understood theory, is that bright cheer and homely happiness wards off the effects of the mental corruption. This secondary theory holds more water, though is not completely scientifically proven by worthwhile sources.
History
The first reported account of this strange ailment came in 1632 Post-Sundering, before it's overwhelming presence in 1708, which resulted in a struggle known as the Twilight War, a war which was declared ended in 1712, with the fall of Bytopia, the capital of Vrellez.
Cultural Reception
Those affected are often paranoid themselves, though the nature of it's insanity is vague, which leads its core symptoms to go unnoticed by many. For that reason, it's done naught but twist the social connection and relationship across The Material Plane, this has made many far more violent, or fearful, which bleeds into the culture of The Material Plane, twisting it for the worse as heightened emotions such as the previously stated are spread throughout the land. As for the Vilebloods however, they are seen as monsters, and for good reason, though for less well founded reasons, they are seen as snarling beasts and raving lunatics, which leaves particularly cunning Vilebloods to roam freely, carrying about their terrible plans.
