The Gnashing Nightmare
Due to the gruesome diet of Vilebloods, the greater cities of the Material Plane are the most endangered by direct, largescale raids of the hungering monsters. As such, a law is in place. Once to twice per week in a consistent enough pattern, large cities like New Yharnam and Weluyn go into a lockdown period usually lasting 24 hours. They spend most of the week preparing for future attacks, and have systems in place to notice the incoming hoards. It is illegal for denizens to wander the city during the period of the Gnashing Nightmare, with few guards in place to kill off or simply scout out for dangers pertaining to the invading Vilebloods. Due to how taxing these events often are, a city's defenses are the most vulnerable post Nightmare, often forcing the common folk to place their trust and meager coin into mercenaries, private professionals or wandering adventurers to address issues or their own safety.
In any case, guards and city officials tend to be private armies and influential nobility which leaves the peasantry to deal with their often serious predicaments individually, largely lacking the ability to do so on their own more often than not.
Each city has their own individual days in which the Gnashing Nightmare often occurs, with Graycrest or Hodcrest being the most common for Weluyn while Helmcrest and Doicrest are most common for New Yharnam.
The Gnashing Nightmare has become more frequent, occurring twice a week or even thrice more often than ever before, save the years pertaining to the Twilight War.
History
The Gnashing Night Terrors were a threat describing the growing threat of Vilebloods during the early days of the Twilight War before they were dubbed such. Overtime, when their presence became commonplace, the name evolved into that of it's current denomination, when the Nightmare became a reoccurring event, universal throughout Vrellez and even spreading to the rest of the Material Plane, though having a much less present role than in the daily lives of Vrellezi denizens.
Execution
A series of great bells, short range radio networks and even town criers will be depended upon to signal the populace of the coming Nightmare. Noblemen are tended to first and foremost, followed by the general public, as the cities would crumble without them due to the general structure of Vrellezi hierarchy.
Components and tools
Radios are commonplace in Vrellez, allowing for communication within their own city. They are often used to send out a largescale alarm, signaling the coming of The Gnashing Nightmare. In addition, a great bell in an irregular pattern is an often employed tool. When times are desperate and a city or large town is not fortunate enough to be equipped with either, town criers and guards are sent out to collect all missing persons into their homes.
Participants
The city guard and leading authority is irreplaceable in the lockdown of their respective cities, as any Nightmare not properly prepared for could lead to the destruction of the whole city. Due to the nature of Vrellezi politics, the influential and wealthy are the only ones truly equipped to provide that aid.
Observance
Once the patterns were observed in great detail, a range of probability was created, one that has been clearly documented, allowing them to prepare preemptively for the margine of error. Taking into account the possibility of out of sync attacks however, they overprepare, as to have a fallback during emergency Nightmare events.
