Dhampir

Poised between the worlds of the living and the dead, dhampirs retain their grip on life yet are endlessly tested by vicious hungers. Their ties to the undead grant dhampirs a taste of a vampire’s deathless prowess in the form of increased speed, darkvision, and a life-draining bite.   With unique insights into the nature of the undead, many dhampirs become adventurers and monster hunters. Their reasons are often deeply personal. Some seek danger, imagining monsters as personifications of their own hungers. Others pursue revenge against whatever turned them into a dhampir. And still others embrace the solitude of the hunt, striving to distance themselves from those who’d tempt their hunger.

The Fryee and the Wistisch

Far into the past of Aio, during the rule of the Vrell empire, there were two children born as twins. One was taken by their human counterpart, while the other was whisked away by their vampiric lineage. These were the first instances of the dhampirs. One of the dhampirs, raised by human hands and victim to human cruelty grew to nobility as the house of Fryee. The other hid among the shadows, feasting to quell their everlasting hunger and becoming known as the house of Wistisch. It is the blood of these two houses, that birthed the lineage of a dhampir. Variants formed throughout time as some now feast on more than blood, craving flesh, abstract concepts such as thoughts and memories, or even color. If one thing is clear from a dhampir's hunger, it's that something must be taken for them to live on through such a consumption.

Kin to Vilebloods

Remnants of The Sundering are imbedded into the very identity of Aio, ranging from lost lands, ruins and magical oddities. Though it is not known if the now prominent Vilebloods share a connection to the old world, various creatures and peoples have been birthed throughout time in Aio which reflect the horrors the Vilebloods bring forth. Dhampirs are one of many in this image. Vampires date much further back than even the old world, yet their brethren, born of the same cursed blood that runs near frozen through vampiric veins are born of the suffering world, Aio.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Derived of humans yet flexible to apply to any race, dhampirs are classified by the curse that ails their existance, not their race of origin, and as such any humanoid race can become a dhampir.

Genetics and Reproduction

If a dhampir's original race reproduced sexually, they become sterile, unable to have children through previously natural means. Dhampirs reproduce by spreading their curse, with one of many ways to do so being a magical pact followed by the mingling of blood. Though there are various ways to force the transformation of a subject, many are performed by powerful patrons and creatures. Dhampirs themselves are much more limited, and must make peace with far more consensual methods of transformation.

Growth Rate & Stages

Dhampirs barely age past the year of their transformation, with 20 years aging them equal to a few months worth of time when compared to a human.

Ecology and Habitats

Largely unaffected by their environ, dhampirs require only the ability to feed as to satisfy their curse.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Though it varies quite drastically, dhampirs feed off a vital element of a living being. Ranging from psychic energy to blood and bone, to the very dreams of a living creature. It's hunger is destructive and emotionally or physically harmful, as is derived from the vampiric blood they carry.

Biological Cycle

After transformation a dhampir ages incredibly slowly, yet that doesn't mean they do not die of old age. It is at the very end of their lifespan, which can last for a millennia or far further depending on their race of origin, that a dhampir is able to choose a natural demise, or adopt a further connection to their curse's origin and become something greater.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Sharing some of their vampiric boons yet greatly diminished in power, dhampirs carry sharp fangs which grant them boons as they satiate their hunger. In addition they carry a partially undead nature which greatly extends their lifespan. They carry greater speed, the power to move up vertical surfaces and even peer through the dark.
