Muara

Mistress of the Hearth

Daughter of Nu and elder sister of Siyr, Muara governs the Sigil of Home and is the goddess of hospitality. The spirits of the dead dwell in her palace in the Otherworld while waiting to be reincarnated. Following Nu's murder, Muara has claimed her mother's place as leader of the Pantheon and attempted to maintain the cycle of birth and death. Only a few of the Korsamu have remained loyal, however, and Muara has been struggling to keep order, often failing to stop spirits from breaking through to the Mortal World and Siyr from openly creating undead.   Muara sometimes walks the world disguised as a destitute mortal of varying species, age, and gender. At night, she begs for hospitality at homes and inns in this form. Those who treat her well will find that hospitality returned ten-fold when they enter her realm upon death. Those who treat her poorly receive her Mark, the image of a broken key burned into their foreheads for all to see. This mystic symbol cannot be removed (although there are legends of it being done—usually through divine intervention—no instances of such an event have been documented outside of legend), and its power prevents the afflicted from entering any dwelling. Furthermore, mortals find the presence of such individuals disquieting and will instinctively mistrust them even if they cannot see the Mark. As such, these wretched beings are shunned and doomed to live the rest of their lives as exiles.   Upon their deaths, it is said that they may supplicate themselves before Muara, and if she sees genuine remorse in their hearts, she will heal them and treat them as guests. If she sees that they have not been humbled by the experience, she will cast them out, dooming them to wander the Otherworld until their pride has been crushed. It is said that Siyr sometimes comes to these outcast spirits and offers them resurrection as undead in exchange for their loyalty. Muara's mark will appear on their undead form; however Siyr's power will lesson the curse: it will have no disquieting effect on other undead, only the living. Furthermore, these undead may access any building they have constructed themselves or into which they have been invited by the owner.
