Schmardt

The Schmardt are a local lineage of goblins adapted to the deep boreal forest. The name "Schmardt" comes from proto-goblin, literally meaning "the one who upsets," but more commonly translated as "disruptor."

Culture and cultural heritage

The Schmardt are scaventers and keepers of the forest. Though the Sörsch and Ûth view them as pests, they understand themselves as scavenger-stewards who repurpose what the forest forgets. Their self-assessment is largely accurate. They do not revere gods, per se, instead tending to revere localized forest spirits, or even in a few cases, worshipping Wo Blöpptosdt (after a fashion).

They are indifferent to fey, whether Sælfey or Unsælfey, which makes them less fearful of the Woansch. They do track its expansion and know of its exact location. They have Watchers, who planted bioluminscent fungi along its perimeter generations ago, and they have watched how it has bled outward beyond those fungi since then. Every tenth year, the Watchers plant new boundary fungi.

Shared customary codes and values

The Schmardt value cleverness. It is the primary virtue in their culture. They are empathetic, and even kind, in their way, but outsiders rarely understand that aspect of their culture because they are secretive and opportunistic. They won't actively harm anyone else in self-defense, but they will squat in someone else's home if they leave it unattended, for example.
