Purple Firekiss

Overview

The Purple Firekiss condition is a semi-temporary condition you get when you eat a specific Purple Bellpepper. The purple bellpepper is one of three bellpeppers in Koria which are spicy to a degree and the purple bellpepper is the spiciest of them all.

Getting kissed

To get kissed by the fire - and not in a romantic sense - is relatively easy and, in some aspects, definitely painful. To get the Purple Firekiss one has to eat the Purple Bellpepper, mainly the seeds, which are used in a very small variety of dishes, toppings, and sauces. A few chefs can create a recipe where the effects of the seeds - and the capsaicin within - are evenly distributed throughout the entire dish so that the eaters are not getting too much of it at once.   But it doesn't matter how careful and graceful a dish is crafted, the capsaicin still remains. There are dishes which have a slower delivery, some others are right on the nose and some people eat an entire Purple Bellpepper in one sitting, with seeds and everything. Once the capsaicin has reached a certain threshold inside your body, the effects start to appear and your body can't fight anymore against the horrid burning sensation.

Temporary or not, that is the question

The Purple Firekiss is a semi-permanent condition. Why semi-permanent? Because this specific type of capsaicin is degrading very, very, very slowly in your body, and it builds up over time. It depends on your tolerance how fast it builds up and degenerates. But if you overdo it, the capsaicin changes your body permanently.   What are the timeframes one has to expect? Here it depends on the species and your own body. Dragonborns can eat a lot - wagons even - in the span of a year and are unchanged, Humans eat two of them in a year and feel and see the changes immediately. Some think they are hard game and... well, die. A slow, agonising death.

Appearance

Aside from the internal problems one might encounter, the most signifying sign you are kissed by the Purple Firekiss is, that the white in your eyes is starting to get coloured in some red-ish hue. Most of the time it is a vibrant red, in others it is orange to yellow, in very rare cases even dark purple.   If one overdoes it or is especially suspictable to this special capsaicin, their skin begans to change colour as well, mostly in the limbs. And if it does, the agony starts.

Effects, Dangers, Relieve

Capsaicin is a dangerous thing. In small dosages harmless, but if one amplifies it, it can outright kill you by overheating your body. Yes, the "hotness" in the spices is basically pain, so your body shuts down everything because the overwhelming pain is too great to bear.   Affected by the Purple Firekiss it normally starts with the change of ones sclera, the white of the eyes (or whatever colour your sclera is in your species). It does not stop there, because once your eyes are affected by too much of the change, they start to itch. You still with me or too much?   Yes, they are itching. From the inside. You can't scratch that particular itch. People tried and it did not went well, some people even gorged out their eyes. Instead of waiting.   If you continue to eat the seeds of the Purple Bellpepper, your skin changes colour - in terms of Dragonborn the skin underneath the scales - to some stained/patchy looking pattern and those patches start to itch as well. Those can lead to death, because one scratch so much, that they start to bleed, open critical blood vessels with their appendages and even get infected, which leads to blood poisoning and death if untreated.   And how does one get treated with the Purple Firekiss? Well... you wait. Your body gets rid of the capsaicin over time. Drinking milk can help as well, but only to a small degree. Cooling your body with cold water can help with the itch in the extremities, but not with the itch in the eyes.

Tellings of Spice

"What happened here, Doctor?"
"Not much. Poor sod ate a Flamekissed Barbecue too much. The capsaicin build up, he didn't know what to do, scratched open his arms and somehow infected himself. He bled to death."
"Poor guy. At least his eyes are still there."

"Aaaaah, that hit the spot. Your Bellpepper Crisp is one of a kind!"

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh....!"
"Wha' happened 'ere?", asked the dwarven miner. His human host chuckled.
"An elf who couldn't stand my Purple Bellpepper Crispy Crust. - How do you like the dessert?"
"Delicious. Reminds me of me Red Blinda puddin'."
"Very good, I am truly honoured by your words."
"As ya should.", grinned the dwarf between bites.

Wow, not a nice way to end your life. The first quote was hilarious and sad at the same time. As always, a spicy article. I enjoyed reading it, but it proves that I should probably stay away from anything too spicy – even if the spice must flow!

Thank you, it is not a good - even if delicious - way to end your life. Oh and every dish with Purple Bellpepper seeds comes with a warning, just in case. I think Dragonborns are the only ones who are a bit resistant against it, but not for long, even they have a threshold.

oooo this would be dangerous for me. I love spicy food. Why would you tempt me so Eddie! Excellent article, well written and though dangerous it does in fact also sound delicious. I simply must tuck this away in the collection.

I am indeed sorry, Keon. Well, a bit at least.

Thank you, thank you. You might try out the Purple Bellpepper and their seeds, but you have to be careful. And since we are talking about careful, it really depends on the state of the Bellpepper how much capsaicin it contains. The range would go - in our terms - from the middle six digits to lower seven digits on the Scoville scale. So sitting between Vicious Viper Hot Sauce and Carolina Reaper Sauce. I would recommend creating a Chili Crisp with one of those, then you get the closest experience without the potentially deadly itching. :)
