Ilithry

Overview

Ilithry are artificial grown crystals, look like elongated sapphires and are, aside from their own worth and properties, next to useless. Not a good introduction to something called Ilithry, aye?

Alright, lets start from the beginning.

Historical beginnings

At the beginning was darkness. Then Koria, the Eternals and the Eternal Runes happened. And with them: magic.

From beyond the veil it comes, pulled by magic users into Koria. With it came power, responsibility, fucktards, and the Crystal Vein Syndrome, an allergic reaction which causes the body to crystalize over a long timespan and then trap the soul inside the crystalised body.

So scientists, nurses, and scholars got together and to work. They wanted to ease the pain, hold off the effects or outright neutralise the condition, the illness, this death sentence, this eternal torment in blue.

They tried it with concoctions and other potions, even contracted the Alchemist Guild to help them. It was to no avail at first, but lets not be hasty. The most urgent problem was, that the bodies became solid, which made the entire drinking-part at some point very difficult, sometimes even outright dangerous, if the mouth is only open enough to breathe through without the possibility of regulating if you take in air or liquid.

So liquid solutions should work at the beginning of the Syndrome, but beyond that? Solid solutions?

They had a hard time thinking about it, then some genius had a brilliant idea - even they couldn't recall their train of thought - and asked their fellow researchers about crystals.

"What is with crystals?"
"Whats about them?"
"They are solid. If we can find a solution to slow down the crystalisation process, we might be able to grow crystals with the same properties."
"Yes, that might work, but why? To what end?"
"Duh, necklaces? Rings? Bracelets? Emitting the solution while wearing it?"
"...fuck me..."
"No, thank you."
— The conversation, probably

The problem at hand was to determine the properties of the potions, which turned out was the wrong way. So they started to grow the crystals which turned out in a very dark, shimmering blue, emitting a faint radiation. It took a lot of time to enhance the strength of the radiation, but it showed, that the process of crystalisation was slowed down. It couldn't get stopped, that was out of reach, but it gave the infected a break and a bit more time.

Crushing the crystals to a really, really fine powder was an effective method to add to the potions. It worked quite well, but could only extend the time the patients had, not fend the Crystal Vein Syndrome off. They were doomed from the beginning.
