Flatbread

Overview

Flatbread. It is a really, really flat bread. No, not kidding. It is what you get when you bake a bun, press it down and fry it. Or bake it again. Then you get Flatbread.

History

Originated as part of rations from early settlers, Flatbread was used as basis alongside with dried sausages and cheese. After the larger settlements were established and people didn't need to travel as often as much, Flatbread was discarded if you aren't on the road. Until... until farmers and small households - especially in the northern regions around the Emerald Planes or Ganguk - thought about it as a snack or as an appetizer and brought it back to the dinner tables.

At first it was stale, without dips or other partners to get eaten with, but over time Flatbread was back, oh, so back on the tables. Grapes, cheese, cream, small sausages, berries... whatever the host found appropriate to serve and was available.

Funny enough, even in the noble houses and even royalty Flatbread made a returning move. Not as stale, but with high-quality ingredients, served with salty fish eggs, boar sausages, fine grapes, whatever the delicate tongues of the noblepeople fancied. In Pisocenia it was custom to serve their variant of Flatbread with a spicy dip, mostly a creamy white sauce with spices in it which looks harmless and burns pleasantly.

Pisocenia is also the country where Flatbread is the most consumed before main dishes. It is also found in Eirskjöldr with the Copperkin dwarves where it is infused with mushroom bits.

Base Recipe

The base recipe is quite easy.
You need flour, milk, butter, and salt. Melt the butter, combine the other ingredients in a bowl, knead it, let it rest for roughly an hour, roll, heat the pan, cook them. Once finished, put a moist cloth over the Flatbread pieces to soften them up. A few people like to cover the Flatbread with butter for a more glazed finish.
