Tainted Places

"You've got to be careful going into places like that. Not all hazards can be fought with a sword, and not all places give you much more warning than a chill up your spine."   ~Abide Baht Mig, Caravaneer

Manifestation

Tainted places have a grim look. Shadows are darker, light and cheery colors are faded, and the only splash of bright color you're likely to see is red.   A sense of dread accompanies these places, as does frequent chills and paranoia.

Saving VS. Taint

Committing evil deeds in a tainted place can stain the soul. If an evil act is committed, roll a Wisdom Save DC 12. Failure acquires 1 level of Taint.   Additionally, exposure to necrotic damage or the supernatural attacks of evil creatures (especially undead or fiends) can also confer taint if in an tainted place, DC 8+the amount of damage the attack inflicted.   Finally, spending a week in a tainted place also risks gaining a level of Taint, with the Wisdom Save DC 6+the number of weeks spent in that location.   Critical failure on this roll instead incurs a final DC 16 Charisma Save. Failure on this save infects the character with the Gray Wasting.   A season outside of the tainted area or a day spent on Holy Ground resets this number.

Casting Spells in a Tainted Place

To successfully cast a spell in a tainted locale, the caster must roll a Concentration Check DC 12+their level of Taint. Failure means that they must roll on the chart to the right.

Localization

Tainted places occur where heinous acts have been committed, especially those with a supernatural element. Here, the magic is polluted by horrors.   Examples of where such pollution is possible; A house where a family was murdered in their sleep by an axe-wielding demon cultist for sacrifice, an orphanage where a monster masquerading as a human threw an infant demon into a window, anywhere 9th level necromancy spells have been cast, the site of a battle that ended in a massacre, the lair of an ancient vampire, a temple to an evil god.
